Letchworth Garden City Eagles 1 - 3 Hadley Wood & Wingate
Two wins in a row moves Hadley Wood & Wingate up the league
A second away win in a row moved Hadley Wood & Wingate up to 6th in the Herts County Senior Premier League after a 3-1 victory at last season's runners up Letchworth Garden City Eagles.
The match started brightly for Hadley Wood & Wingate when after 7 minutes Joe Foley floated a ball in-between the Letchworth defence towards Ike Nzuruba who put his volley over the bar.
The majority of the first half was dominated by Hadley Wood however they were unable to make the breakthrough despite Lewis Jones hitting the bar on 24 minutes and a nicely worked corner routine which led to James Karena's powerful strike from the edge of the box going just over.
With five minutes left of the first half both teams had one-one-one opportunities to break the dead lock with Ike Nzuruba's shot being saved following a superb through ball from debutant 16 year old Romelle Alomenu and a minute later Letchworth's chance of their own was put over the bar.
The second half started with a bang when within three minutes of kick off Hadley Wood finally made the breakthrough after a long ball from the left hand side split the Letchworth defence and Lewis Jones beat the offside trap to give himself a one-on-one chance which he put away with confidence.
Three minutes later Hadley Wood doubled their lead when a throw in from the right hand side was played to Nzuruba who showed great hold up play to set the ball up for Joe Killingback to drill his shot into the bottom left corner beyond the goalkeeper's reach.
With Hadley Wood in complete control of the game it was a huge shock when Letchworth Garden City Eagles pulled a goal back on 72 minutes when a cross from the right caught the wind and flew over the head of Thomas Spenser in the Hadley Wood goal.
A nervy next 15 minutes began with Letchworth having chances to equalise but with three minutes remaining Hadley Wood finally put the game to bed after long cross field ball from the left hand side fell to substitute Steve Burford, who had been causing havoc for his full back since coming on, once again beat his full back and powered into the area leading to a drilled ball across the box landing on the head of Joe Foley to seal the win.
Hadley Wood & Wingate will look to make it three away wins in a row on Saturday 25th September when they travel to Stanton & Puckeridge.
