Hadley Wood & Wingate 4 - 3 Broadfields United
By Sam Jones
Joe Sharpe’s stunning strike helped Hadley Wood and Wingate secure a thrilling 4-3 victory against Broadfields United in the Spartan South Midlands Football League Division One.
16 year-old Nicholas Kouroushi and Andreas Kyprianou also got on the scoresheet for Hadley Wood in an end-to-end encounter at the Maurice Rebak Stadium.
Neither team took control of the game in the early stages and there was a lack of quality in the final third. Early Broadfields pressure came to nothing as they were unable to fashion a clear cut opportunity.
Hadley Wood’s first real chance of the game came after 25 minutes. Alex Hadjithemistou played in Bradley Dujon, but his shot rebounded back off the post. At the other end, Ross Weinbarbe was called into action when he tipped Connor Spinks’ shot over the bar.
The game needed a goal to spark it into life and it was the home side that broke the deadlock. Kyprianou bundled the ball home after a cross from Karl Stevenson was not dealt with by Broadfields’ backline.
Kyprianou then turned provider three minutes later as he assisted Kouroushi. The winger’s left footed strike nestled into the bottom corner to double Hadley Wood’s advantage just before the break.
Broadfields started the second half brightly and halved the deficit within a minute of the restart. Andrew Manitou headed in from a Josh Warren corner.
But Hadley Wood restored their two goal advantage when Kyprianou tapped in from close range after great work from Dujon down the right.
The away side were then awarded a penalty with a quarter of an hour to go, as Jamie Moon was clipped by Vassili Madeville in the box. Warren stepped up and scored to set up a frantic last 15 minutes.
The next goal was crucial. And what a goal it was. Sharpe saw Nathan Dyos off his line and executed an audacious curling effort to lob the Broadfields ‘keeper from 25 yards out.
The scoring did not end there as United went up the other end for a consolation third goal. Warren raced through on goal and grabbed his second of the game in stoppage time, but it did not make a difference. Sharpe’s long range effort proved to be the winner and Hadley held on to all three points.
Hadley Wood & Wingate are next in action when they take on Baldock Town at home on Saturday 29th October.
