Hadley Wood & Wingate 0 - 1 Hatfield Town
By Nikhil Saglani
Hadley Wood & Wingate were defeated in the quarter-final of the Division One Cup at home to Hatfield Town FC.
The hosts had the first chance of the game on 11 minutes, but Brandon Dujon’s shot was held comfortably by Kieran Extenee. Two minutes later, Nicholas Kouroushi’s powerful effort was also saved by Hatfield’s keeper, who had been busy.
Max Kyte also had two chances to open the scoring before the 20th minute but headed one wide, from a Karl Stevenson cross, and saw one blocked for a corner kick. Besides the referee brandishing a yellow card on the half hour mark, the only other highlights of the quiet first half were two chances that fell to Hatfield’s striker, Otim – that he put wide at the back stick.
Frankie Webb made all three of his changes, one being forced through an injury to Kouroushi, before the 70th minute. And in the 77th minute, a cross into the Hatfield box led to confusion but Webb’s side were unable to capitalise and take a late lead - and the visitors went on the break looking to win it.
On 79 minutes, they did just that. A cross was floated in from the right wing by Harry Baker and headed past Ross Weinrabe by Chris Gray – leaving the atmosphere at the Maurice Rebak Stadium to fall flat.
Muyiwe Osenie subsequently fired a shot high and wide in the 82nd minute before seeing an effort cleared off the line, after beating the keeper, in the final seconds of the tie. But the hosts couldn’t find an equaliser and were left to rue missed chances in both halves, waving their chances of winning the Division One Cup goodbye.
