Hailsham Town went down 1-0 in front of a packed Beaconsfield crowd on Boxing Day to Eastbourne United Association.

The only goal of the match came as early as the 15th minute when ex-Stringers striker Peter Cooper despatched a penalty past Russell Tanner - but it was certainly not the only action of that early spell. Just a minute before Cooper's goal, Hailsham could have had a penalty themselves after a strong shout for handball was waved away - chances for Salvidge and Leach also close.

After the interval, Hailsham again piled on the pressure - Tanner making a couple of good saves, but at the other end, Saunders, Salvidge and Jarvis close whilst Hailsham, on another day, would have been awarded a further two spot kicks of their own. As time ticked away, subs Dallaway and Alexander linked up well, whilst right at the death, Ash Hall saw his cross hooked away with fellow frontmen in good positions.

The defeat is Hailsham's third of the season, with The Stringers still maintaining second place in Division Two ahead of Thursday's visit of Mile Oak, a 7.30 kickoff at The Beaconsfield.
