Irish shirt tribute to player Johnny

A MUCH-LOVED dad, grandad, uncle and star player continues to be remembered two years after his death.

Johnny Hough died two years ago aged 55 from bowel cancer.

The well-known footballer was Halifax League player of the year in the 1985-6 season. He made 575 first team appearances for the then Irish Democratic Club team.

In August last year, the Johnny Hough Football Tournament was organised by the Halifax Irish Club. It raised £250, which was given to his widow Margaret to donate to a charity of her choice.

She chose to recognise the nurses at the Colorectal Unit at Calderdale and Huddersfield Foundation Trust and with a doubly good reason. The staff helped with Johnny’s treatment and did the same when Margaret herself was diagnosed with bowel cancer.

“The nurses were so supportive and since I have been diagnosed they have done the same again,” said Margaret.

“In the week Johnny died they were there for us. They had a big shock when they saw me. When I was discharged, they were ringing me, checking on me. They have been absolutely wonderful.”

She wants to raise awareness of the condition.

“If Johnny had gone a bit sooner, he could still be here. I’d urge anyone to go and get checked as soon as they need to.”

Now, a new generation of footballers will be brought up to remember Johnny, known to many as Houghy.

His brother and sister-in-law Allan and Josephine Hough have sponsored kits for the under 13s Halifax Irish football club in Johnny’s memory.

Calderdale Heart Care’s logo is on the front of the shirt and the back carries a tribute to Johnny.

When the team now run out in their new kits, their opponents will see the tribute to Johnny on their backs.
