U15's Come Up Short in Cup - Lost on Run Rate
U15's Lose on Run rate.....
The new look U15's took to the field against Thornbury with great anticipation.
Batting first we scored slowing on a wicket that was keeping very low. The opening partnership of Matt Higgins and Kieron Smith keeping patient against some very tight Thornbury bowling.
When Higgins fell LBW for 6 the normally reliable Connor Williams-Hicks announced his arrival by running the quick singles but was bowled for 8 to the low bounce.
Mitchell Vardy and Dan Spalding did their best to get the score moving, but they were eclipsed by Danika Dyer who punished some wayward bowling later in the innings hitting 28* off just 33 deliveries.
In reply we started strongly with Connor Williams- Hicks taking a caught & bowled off the 4th ball of the innings. This coupled with Micthell Vardy keeping things tight from the other end.
Connor Summers on debut impressed with his left arm finger spin - taking 2 for 23 off his 4 overs.
Unfortunately our support bowlers struggled to find a consistant line and bowled much too short. The result was we gave far too many opportunities for the Thornbury batsmen to punish the bad ball or push into the gaps.
In the field we struggled to retain our energy levels. This resulted in misfields and overthrows at keys moments.
With the light rapidly disappearing the match was abandoned with 16 overs of the Thornbury Innings completed, needing just 8 runs to win.
Under rules of the competition Thornbury progress to the next round by virtue of a superior run rate - congratulations to them!
Perhaps a somewhat harsh appraisal of the new look Hambrook U15's - but taking into account the sub-arctic conditions we gave it a good shot.
Certainly lots to work on but the basis is there for better things to come.
Finally, we thank Howard Marshall and Thornbury C.C. for a match played in a great spirit and for the post match hospitality.
