Hamburg Sevens Rugby Tournament

Hamburg Sevens is this Saturday! Everything is organised and now we just need the fans and the players!

With the Hamburg Sevens tournament this Saturday the foreign teams should be about to begin their journey over to Hamburg. Hamburg Exiles RFC are looking forward to welcoming them, the other German teams and anyone interested in seeing some exciting, high quality Rugby Sevens.

The Hamburg Sevens shall be celebrating its 40th year it is a tournament organised by the Hamburg Exiles Rugby club. This years event is taking place on the 14th of May at Rugby Stadion, Saarlandstrasse 71, Hamburg. Entry for spectators is free. 16 teams from inside and outside Germany shall be competing to win the tournament overall. The games begin at 10:00 AM and run throughout the day, finishing with up the final at some point before tea. With the games, BBQ food, cakes, drinks and music on offer the day should have something for everyone. As per usual the fun and games shall continue on late until the evening.

Rugby Sevens is a fast paced variant on Rugby Union and this year will be played as an Olympic sport in Rio. Rugby Union is traditionally played with teams of fifteen players, so with less than half the players on the pitch (7 per side), only seven minutes per half (ten for the Cup finals) and a two minute half time break for the players to catch their breath the pace of sevens is electrifying.

The game demands speed, agility, a high level of fitness and clever tactics. Successful teams plan and practice how to exploit the big areas of open space you get from having fewer players on the pitch. Normally there are less rucks, mauls, scrums and lineouts in the Sevens game and this usually leads to a fast moving, skilful 14 minutes of nail-biting entertainment.
