The Hammers will play Team Solent at home in the Extra Preliminary round of the FA Cup.
Team Solent, a University side, may begin their campaign at a disadvantage due to the fact some of their students will not be back until September - but manager Cal Brooks is not banking on Team Solent’s missing men allowing Hamworthy to advance into the next round.
“Knowing how Team Solent set up as a club, you could summise that they might not be at full strength at the beginning of the season.
“However, for me, I am only concerned about what I can control - how we prepare the group to perform in games. That’s my job no matter the opposition - we could be playing a National League side, a Wessex side or a Sunday league side - it remains the same, because we have to get our preparation right.”
The winners of the tie will face Southern League West side AFC Totton at home, but Brooks will not be turning his eye towards that potential fixture until well after the final whistle against Team Solent.
“It would be wasted energy to even think about that game. We can take nothing for granted - we might not even play them.”
“Because Totton are a local club, I’ll be keeping a general eye on their results and the way they play, but the same goes for all clubs in the local area. Pre-season and our first game of the season are the only things we’re focusing on right now.”
In the FA Vase the draw has also kindly given Hamworthy another home draw, against recently relegated Amesbury. Brooks is hoping that home advantage will be a big difference in both ties.
“I think the main key about both games is the fact we will be playing at home. A home draw is very benficial for us, as I feel our facilities are as good as any at this level.”
“It’s about taking the work we’ve done in our training sessions so far, cementing the way we want to work as a side, and carrying that into the new campaign, one game at a time.”
