2. Handsworth Junior Sporting Club- History

The beginning of Handsworth Junior Sporting Club of which we are the senior team, was in the 1986/87 season when Mick Wragg and Bob Hill decided to try and give lads in the Handsworth area a recreational outlet by the formation of a football team which ran under the banner of Handsworth Boys. With just one team having a squad of 16 players and 32 family members who followed the boys playing in the Sheffield & District Junior Sunday League Under10 section. Handsworth is a suburb in the South-east of Sheffield and is sadly lacking in quality sports facilities for the youth of the area.
It was in 1988 that a decision was made to increase the ranks of the club, not just have an Under12’s but also an Under10 and Under11 section. This was a big step for the club but we felt it was the right time to give more lads the opportunity to become involved with organised competitive football which increased the club to have 48 players and over 100 family members.
Each year since, we have increased our sections and now have teams playing on a Sunday from Under 7’s with mini-soccer through to our Under 18’s. The Under 7’s are introduced to the club by Bob Hill who remains an invaluable member of the club and is now President, sadly Mick Wragg passed away in 1990 aged just 36.
In the August at the start of the 1998/1999 season, the club had the opportunity in association with Sheffield City Council to take over the running of Olivers Mount sports ground, formally belonging to the old steel company Brown Baileys, which ceased trading in 1982. Their main site was used to build the Don Valley Stadium, but the sports ground was left to dilapidate and was subject to vandalism. The option on this ground meant that we had a focal point in one location for our teams instead of them playing at several different schools and recreation pitches around the Handsworth area. It was the forward thinking of the committee to see the potential of the ground and with the expertise and willing workforce from the parents of the players at that time, the neglected sports ground soon became transformed, which was helped with a serious lottery grant for a £1.1 Million towards the facilities we now have at Olivers Mount
We formed the Senior Section of the club in 2003 with players from our own academy, Handsworth FC have progressed through the Sheffield & Hallamshire County Senior Leagues, Under 19’s football followed the next season when we joined the Northern Alliance Under 19 League and gained promotion in our first season to Division Two finishing runners up to Frickley. We moved with the newly formed North Midlands Under 19 League as one of the founder members in season 2006 – 2007 where we have been Division One Champions for four consecutive seasons. The first team were promoted to the then Koolsport Northern Counties East League Division One in 2010. Ground improvements needed to compete at this level were required, unfortunately problems with the local council and planning permission resulted in the League with drawing our membership in 2012 despite winning Division One and the Presidents Cup.
Last season we merged with Worksop Parramore after a lengthy consultation with the FA, Parramore’s were brought into the umbrella of Handsworth Junior Sporting Club, renaming the Senior male teams accordingly. We now have a total of 28 teams competing from Under 7’s to Over 35’s including most age groups for girls and a Ladies team.
