History - History 1

Heathfield & Waldron Rugby Football Club was founded by a group of local school teachers back in 1979. The Club's first pitch was a field behind their school and opponents were teams such as Brighton 4ths and Crowborough 3rds! Today, nearly thirty years on, the Club has grown to become one of the most respected and successful rugby clubs in Sussex with 4 senior teams, 2 Colts teams and representative teams at all other age groups in the Junior and Mini sections of the Club. In conjunction with Hellingly RFC and Hastings and Bexhill RFC, we also operate a women's team under the “H3” banner.
The Club is based at the Hardy Roberts Recreation Ground at Cross in Hand just west of Heathfield (opposite the Esso Petrol Station) where we have the Clubhouse, the main first team pitch and the training pitch. We also have a further two pitches in the village of Waldron about a mile and a half away. However, this season sees the opening of the new Cypress Field alongside the Hardy Roberts Recreation Ground, following completion of the construction of this new pitch. This expansion to the Club's facilities represents a tremendous amount of work by Club volunteers from fundraising through to project management. The new pitch has been named the “Cypress Field” in honour of one of the Club's sponsors, Cypress Drilling, a Texan based oil prospecting company. Over the coming years we have plans for further improvements to our existing infrastructure including a substantial upgrade to the Clubhouse facilities and replacement of the existing floodlights.
