Hanwell Town 2 Northwood 0
Last home game sees win
A disappointingly small Easter crowd assembled at Reynolds Field to witness Town’s final home game of the season. There was little at stake for the Geordies but for the visitors it was a different matter. Northwood began the day just four points above the relegation places, with two games left for themselves and Histon.
The first ten minutes of play saw Hanwell have a lot of possession without causing visiting ‘keeper Borja Loeches-Teixeira (a difficult name to fit in to a chant!) to make a save. However, all that changed two minutes later. A deep, left-footed cross from Zak Joseph was headed back across the area by Tom Hunt to where Callum Wright stooped to head in. Just as he went to make contact he was felled by a head-high boot. A penalty was awarded, which was calmly converted by Dean Allen, his sixteenth goal of the season. (Thank you Stato).
The ensuing twenty minutes were as ‘end-of-season’ as the first ten with the only noteworthy goal attempts coming from visiting forwards, Ryan Debattista, Jay Thorne and Louis Bircham. Up the other end Loeches-Teixeira had managed to beat Kyle Watson to a Joe Chandiram cross and got a good fist to another deep cross from Zak. As the half-time whistle approached Joe’s free kick reached Tom via Zak, but he failed to make contact.
Northwood began the second half with the urgency their situation demanded, forcing Melvin Minter to save well with his legs and Kyle to bravely block a shot from Debattista. They then had the ball in the net but the whistle had been blown for a foul on Melvin. Town then came more into the game and within a two-minute spell Dean, George Ehui and Tom all went close to doubling the lead. Not long after that Callum went very close with a free kick and George had a strike on goal well held. The Woods were still striving for an equalizer, with Melvin being called upon to head away a through ball, Bircham volleying wide when well-placed and Thorne hitting the woodwork.
Town continued to threaten a second goal and Tom went close from another Zak cross. Substitute Harvey Killeen then crossed to Callum, who looked to have headed the ball into the goal when Loeches-Teixeira produced a magnificent one-handed save. With time running out Zak went close from thirty yards. He then went on a mazy dribble, including an audacious step-over in the area, before setting up Callum to crash the ball into the back of the net.
With the Hanwell ‘Massive’ exercising their vocal chords George almost put the icing on the cake in the final minute of normal time, volleying narrowly wide from almost forty yards. The referee’s final whistle did not, however, spell further anxiety for Northwood as Histon had let in a late goal to lose. We will therefore look forward to renewing our rivalry with the Woods next season.
