Greenwich Boro 0 Hanwell Town 1
FA Trophy triumph
The opening fifteen minutes of the second half almost belonged to Greenwich exclusively and we were very rarely seen as an attacking force.
Xavi just managed to scramble a low shot from Babalola around the post and then when a tame corner by Jesse Kewley-Graham was cleared at the near post, there were four Greenwich Borough players racing clear with only Kyle and Joe Chandiram between them and our goal. Fortunately, the player in possession delayed his cross and Kyle got across to clear the danger.
As the half progressed so we came more and more into the game and Greenwich made their first substitution when Peter Sweeney, a member of the Millwall side that lost 3-0 to Manchester United in the 2004 Cup Final and who has made over 250 Football League appearances replaced Hunte.
Shortly after, Callum Wright with his favoured left foot send a free kick wide of the far post and then came an incident that had a bearing on the final result. Gregory received a red card when he lunged recklessly into a tackle with Kyle and referee, Connor Farrell, had no hesitation in sending Gregory off. We then might have had a penalty when the hard working Tom Hunt seemed to be hauled down in the penalty area but Mr Farrell waved play on. Tom then sent a header just wide from Kyle's cross.
With thirteen minutes of the game we made our only substitution with Georges Ehui coming on at full back to allow Glen Yala to move up front to replace Tom. This proved to be an inspired substitution, as events unfolded.
With ten minutes remaining, an intricate movement with Sweeney involved cut our defence wide open but with only Xavi to beat, Babalola screwed his shot wide with Xavi stranded. Within a minute, the ball was in the net but at the other end. Kyle cut across midfield with the ball on his left foot, he played a one two with David Sangola and then played the ball out to Georges overlapping on the right, George's cross was headed by Glen firmly past Ben Bridle-Card and we were ahead !!! Ollie who along with his colleagues in the back four was immense throughout then received our only yellow card of the game when he blocked an intended clearance down field by the Greenwich keeper. As to be expected, Greenwich pushed players forward in the final minutes with a second substitution with forward David Olayskun coming on. An in swinging free kick by Sweeney was flicked goal wards by Babalola but the ball much to our relief drifted wide of the post. With virtually the last kick of the game, Callum wasted a golden opportunity, ignoring better placed team mates to try an ambitious shot from an acute angle when clear on goal, seconds later the final whistle came and we were through to an away tie at Bishops Stortford.
