U15 - Season review

It's been a fantastic season - and still one game to go! Read Ben's review of the season here.

As we close the season with our final game at Imber Court, I thought it pertinent to summarise our fantastically successful inaugural season in the Middlesex-Herts league. The Under 15s have been outstanding this year; both in training and in fixtures. The effort exerted by everyone in the team has never been lacking and development as a result of persistent work-rate has always been evident. I have tried to instil a philosophy which emphasises working on the process of development and it has been extremely rewarding to see the players take on this ethos so well. The vast majority of the players set out individual goals which have been focused on throughout the year and it is noticeable to see how much the squad members have improved.

Our first game against Pinner and Grammarians provided the perfect platform for the season to come. It was a great opportunity to try out new combinations and positions and it was pleasing for the team to work together very well and pull out our first win with a bonus point. The game versus Twickenham, a very physical outfit, gave the coaching staff the first real indication of the Under 15's quality. An extremely low error count in defence and individual flair in attack was the basis of success for the day. Going into the last game before Christmas, we were optimistic about facing Watford who were near the bottom of the table at the time. Though we scored six very good tries, our performance was not as good as it could have been and the frustration was clear for all to see. We could say 'it's the sign of champions to win, even when we don't play well' perhaps?

It was after the Christmas break, when the team really turned up the heat in terms of our performance and quality of rugby. We recorded our largest score margin away at Hackney, dotting the ball down over the line an impressive nine times. Following this was the most hard fought, physically intense and from my point of view, emotionally draining, game against Bedford. It was a terrifically entertaining and absorbing fixture which either team may have come out on top. But thanks to a wonderful performance and a last minute try, we maintained our winning streak. With one more victory, we would almost ensure promotion and the lads did not miss out on this opportunity. The team put on a classy first half performance against Ealing and the game was well and truly decided after thirty minutes. And so to the table topping decider at home versus Enfield. In similar fashion to the Bedford game, this was a brutal encounter between two evenly matched teams. Two very well taken tries were just enough to secure success on the day, gain promotion for the next season and finish top the league; a very good day at the office.

With just one more game to go, I think is important to congratulate all the players on a great few months, which has seen them go from a being group of individuals to a team of seriously talented young men. It has been a real pleasure to take charge of this squad and I can only wish them all the very best for the future and hope they can continue to play to the best of their ability. I would also like to offer my thanks to the parents for their continuous support and encouragement. A special mention and massive thank you to the other coaches for their work behind the scenes to make this season such an enjoyable success.

Well done and thank you to all,

Ben Hodd

Head Coach
