Yarnbury 29 v Harrogate Pirates 25
Another narrow defeat for the Pirates
Pirates travelled to Yarnbury hoping to get back to winning ways after a defeat away to a good Morley side and having had a week off. Pirates Kicked off into a strong wind and the week seemed to have worked as they recovered the ball and a kick into the from Ivan Drane was chased down but was knocked on by the chasing Pirates, this led to a Yarnbury scrum which they won and opted to clear their lines with a kick to touch, Line-out Pirates, this was won cleanly and the ball was given to the backs and with a good 1st phase from the backs the ball was passed down the line and with a great line of running into the line from Full Back Sky Mckeon he ran round the Yarnbury covering defence to score in the corner conversion missed 3 Mins 0-5 to Pirates.
Kick off was taken by Mike Ruthen and an offload to Ryan Bradshaw saw him set off up field on a strong run unfortunately at the ruck the ball was knocked on leading to a Yarnbury Scrum, some good defence from the pirates forced a knock on giving pirates another scrum, a good pick and drive from the back of the pirates scrum was eventually brought down and the pirates again came up having won the scrum feed, the ball was somehow turned over by Yarnbury and the clearing kick gave the Pirates a Line-out on the Yarnbury 10 meter line, line-out ball won and fed to Cal MacKinnon who set off on a jinking run through the Yarnbury defence getting into their 22 however the last pass to Ivan was deemed forward and Yarnbury were off the hook, scrum was won by them and the Pirates defence seemed to go to sleep as the ball was run down the Yarnbury left from about 10 meters from their own line to score under the posts a try which was converted to put the score after 11 min 7-5 to Yarnbury.
Kick off was again won by the Pirates with a good chase from Liam Clark to gather and get the ball out to the backs for another attacking play this was stopped by Yarnbury but at the cost of a scrum to Pirates, scrum ball won the backs set off again setting up an attack but the all was lost forward Yarnbury pounced on the loose ball and set up a n attack of their own with some good running and offloading, good defence from the Pirates won the ball back but an attempted clearance kick from Cal MacKinnnon got caught in the wind and was blown back behind him it looked like Yarnbury were on the loose ball and even when Sky Mckeon got back to collect the ball Pirates still looked in trouble with three Yarnbury players tracking him down, with some good sidestepping and evading the tacklers Sky managed to make good ground to get out of the Pirates 22 and up towards half way, ruck was won and ball was cleared which led to some good driving rucks from Yanrbury was eventually stopped by the Pirates who forced the turnover to win a scrum. A good pick up and drive from Ivan Drane forced Yarnbury to give away and penalty which was kicked to touch on Yarnbury 22, Pirates won the lineout however poor handling led to a turn over which Yarnbury kicked into the Pirates 22, good straight running out of the 22 lead again to Yarnbury conceding a penalty which was kicked to touch, Pirates lineout was misfiring and the dropped ball lead to a Yarnbury scrum, Pirates disrupted the scrum and won the ball from the ensuing ruck causing a knock on to win their own scrum, again some good play from both forwards and back with straight hard running led to another penalty for kicking through the ruck, a quick tap from Cal MacKinnon gained some good yards but Pirates were penalised for going over the top at the ruck some it gave a relieving Penalty to Yarnbury which they kicked for touch and won the lineout and with some good driving rucks kept the Pirates defence honest, eventually though Pirates gave a kickable penalty away for going over the top which Yarnbury took to leave the scores at 10 – 5 to Yarnbury on 30 mins. Stevie Beckett then gave way for Rory Gilbert to come on in the front row.
Kick off didn’t go 10 meters so Yarnbury took the scrum option which they won however the 10 kicked out on the full when trying to pin the Pirates back in their own 22. Pirates took the lineout on the Yarnbury 10 meter line and were gaining good ground but were deemed to have knocked on at a ruck scrum Yarnbury, Yarnbury again kicked for distance but the ball was driven back up field and Yarnbury went in high to give away a penalty, Yarnbury again took the ball at the lineout but knocked on inside their own 22, the scrum was won and Cal MacKinnon went blind and the ball went through Ivan Drane's hands and onto Stu Illingworth who went over in the corner, scores were now 10 – 10 with 37 mins played. Kick off was taken by Liam Clark and driven up field by the Pirates who were called for crossing, Penalty attempt was missed and that was Half Time 10 – 10 .
Second half kicked off with Yarnbury winning the ball as it bounced of a Pirates chest, they then with good hands and some good rucking managed to get through the Pirates defence to score with 2 mins of the half played, 17 – 10 Yarnbury. This woke the Pirates up and after Yarnbury gave away a penalty from the kick-off Cal MacKinnon took a quick tap and ran through the defence to feed Sam Gibbs to score in the right hand corner conversion missed 17 – 15 to Yarnbury with only 5 mins of second half played. Kick off was again taken by Liam Clark who carried on his run through the Yarnbury defence driving towards the Yarnbury 22 who again gave away a penalty which was taken quickly but knocked on to give the scrum away, pressure on the scrum by the Pirates pack led to a knock on from Yarnbury which gave the Pirates a 5 meter scrum which they won, and drove for the line but were held up, the recycled ball was fed out to Liam Clark who went over for the try, conversion missed 17 – 20 Pirates 9 mins played of second half. Kick off was won but the kick to touch went out on the full lineout to Yarnbury on Pirates 10 meter line, Pirates won the lineout with Yarnbury closing at the lineout. Penalty was quickly taken and spread out across the backs but the last pass was deemed forward, at this point Yarnbury asked for uncontested scrums as they had no more front row available, with that in mind more subs were made with Sky Mckeon, Mike Ruthen, Ben Kernoghan and Michal Klimek making way for Sean Glasswell, Pete Maxton, Tushar Parmar and Stevie Beckett. From the uncontested scrum Yarnbury drove forward but were penalised for holding on from a Liam Clark tackle, penalty was wasted and ruck was turned over by Yarnbury who just wanted to clear their lines kick downfield was taken by Richie Paterson who set off back up field reliving his youth scampering up the right hand wing, drawing a penalty for over the top from Yarnbury, Pirates took the lineout option which they won and with Liam Clark driving towards the line Yarnbury gave away yet another penalty Pirates opted for the scrum, pick and go was halted on the line with Pirates giving away a penalty, Yarnbury took the lineout option and won it but were held up to give Pirates put in at the scrum, ball was put through the Pirates backs hands and finished by Liam Clark on the right hand wing. Score 17 – 25 to Pirates 23 mins of second half gone (conversion missed). Kick Off was lost again with Yarnbury keeping the ball well and driving up field and eventually got in under the posts to score and with the conversion scores were 24 – 25 to Pirates 27 mins of second half, Ben Kernoghan then came Back on for Stevie Beckett, from the kick off Yarnbury marched the ball back up field and with a fortunate decision from the Referee were awarded a try in the corner despite everyone on the touch line calling for a dropped ball over the line. Conversion was missed which put the score at 29 – 25 to Yarnbury 30 mins played. Ollie Davies then came on for Ryan Bradshaw for the last 10, last 10 minutes were played in the Yarnbury 22 with a series of scrums penalties and lineout with knock on's from both sides, eventually Pirates won the ball on the 22 and ball went out to the backs and with 4 on 2 and the line begging wrong choice was made and the chance had gone, however Yarnbury had to give away a penalty to stop it, and when a cynical move by one of the Yarnbury players to kick the ball away was questioned by one of the Pirates players the penalty was overturned, ball was kicked to touch Yarnbury won the lineout and kicked the ball dead to end the game, Full Time score Yarnbury 29 – 25 Pirates.
Pirates Man of the Match went to Liam Clark who was outstanding around the park all day.
