Harrogate Pythons started their league campaign with a repeat fixture of the final game of the 2011/12 season, away against Old Otliensians. Harrogate again came away victorious with the score of 17 – 25 to the Pythons, and secured the important bonus point. The first points on the board came from a penalty slotted over by Andrew Kennedy
, ‘Ensians then replied 5 minutes later after sustained pressure resulted in them scoring under the posts making the score 7 – 3. ‘Gate came back with 10 minutes of pressure which resulted in a couple of missed penalties. From a 22 dropout the ball was move wide by ‘Gate, being just short of the line a penalty was awarded and Ivan Drane
took the quick tap to score (7 – 8). At the 25 minute mark ‘Gate were awarded a penalty and after displaying dominance in the scrums the decision was made to take the scrum, resulting in a push over try (7 – 13). During an ‘Ensians attack ‘prop’ turned over the ball with a breakaway try and Ivan Drane
converting the final points of the half (7-20).
The second half started with ‘Esians missing a penalty after just 5 minutes in. Moose intercepted a ‘Ensians ball but was stopped short of the line. The next try came from a run by the ‘Ensians winger, who beat the ‘Gate defence to score at the 60 minute mark (14 – 20). Around the 70 minute mark the ‘Ensiens No 8 received a yellow card, but this didn’t stop them scoring the next set of points from a penalty 5 minutes later. ‘Gates last points of the game came as a result of a forwards drive and a quick pass through to the hands of Liam Monaghan
for him to score in the corner.
The Harrogate Pirates also had a great start to the season beating Castleford 2nds 41 – 10 at home.
On Saturday 8 September the Pythons are at home (Claro Road) to Halifax Vandals in the league, and the Pirates are also at home (Claro Road) to York 3rds in the Merit Table.
