Scunthorpe 15 Georgians 42
A much changed Georgians team still managed to tot up 42 points to register their 17th win on the bounce and take the maximum 5 points.
GEORGIANS OVERPOWER SCUNTHORPE AS UNBEATEN STREAK REACHES 17 GAMES
On the hottest day of the year so far, the Georgians packed their bags and went to the seaside for the rearranged fixture with Scunthorpe.
The much changed Harrogate side, weakened by first team call ups for Edwards, Spencer and the British Lion, but strengthened by the appearance of Old man Tasker were surprised to see that the posts had been removed at Heslam Park owing to the cricket season, so the game was played on a 3rd team pitch with enough sand to make Rory McIlroy feel at home.
With the staggered arrivals of various members of the team owing to work commitments, the young coaching team of Hardy ran yet another professional warm up as Captain Roberts won the toss and elected to play with the breeze but up a slight slope in the first 40.
With the Georgians pack being much larger than the opposing 8, conventional thoughts would have been to keep the ball tight and play a 10 man style of rugby.... not for this Harrogate team who have proven consistently throughout the season that they play best with ball in hand and are the entertainers of the league. The travelling side started well and after various phases of play, with both backs and forwards linking well and being dominant with ball in hand scored a fine try through someone, perhaps Dewsnip. Old Roberts continued his pathetic form with the boot and missed the extras. After a few end to end minutes where Harrogate made a number of errors and penalties were exchanged and the Georgians lead 11-3, the away side pulled their heads out of their proverbial and went back to playing running rugby. The scores soon flowed and as the halftime whistle blew, the score was 21-3 to the visitors.
The second half started much as the 1st had ended, with the Georgians being much the stronger side, but sloppy play and a huge creative void left by the physical specimen that is Quade Beaumont meant that Scunthorpe scored via a fortuitous kick and chase. The score was converted to make it 21-10 to the Georgians. This seemed to galvanise the away side who stepped up the effort and started to make huge yards with ball in hand, Hewitson, Reaveley and Bradshaw excelling in the loose. Unbeknown to the rest of the club, Corner had been on a high protein diet of fish, chips and more chips and the effects of this professional attitude paid off when using all his famed power, weight and no little skill, he cruised through a couple of tackles to score near the posts. Further points came throughout the rest of the half and although further points could have been added if it weren't for the butchery of 32 and Basteraud, the final score was a comfortable 42-15 bonus point win for the Georgians.
In summary, the front row of Bradshaw, Weaving and Reaveley were supreme in the tight and very visible in the loose. The lineouts were a huge success and the scrum was nothing less than solid. The second row of Dewsnip and Pete 'i've lost weight honest' Corner were immense, both weighing in with 5 pointers, in fact Corner bagged himself a brace for the first time since the dentist in '96. The back row of Old man Tasker, Hewitson and Watt were everywhere, with both Tasker and Hewitson being very visible and Watt being very audible. The halfback partnership of Cam Roberts and Z. Carlos worked well considering it was their first game together, with young Roberts looking to snipe at every opportunity and keeping the opposition on their toes and Carlos constantly probing with his creative hands. The new look partnership of Hardy and Basteraud were both solid and spectacular all game. Hardy in particular was aggressive in defence, even though up against a much larger opponent. Kenny was back to his old self, making outside breaks and offloading more often than Sonny Bill. The back 3 epitomised the age differences within the Georgians side with 32 on one wing at 3st wet through and young Lewis Minikin (Lil' Botts) on the other wing. Old Roberts completed the lineup at full back and was disappointed to learn that he was 13 years older than Minikin..... at least its not double his age eh Johnno!?!?
The subs did well when they came on, Innes provided even more stability to the front row and continued where weaving had left off in the loose.
There was only 1 man left to enter the fray and Scunthorpe knew what was coming....his immensely powerful frame had been stalking the touchline for nearly 60 minutes before being given the call and when it was given he didn't disappoint. Aylott was quite simply awesome, the lineouts were immediately a source of ball for the Georgians and the scrum remained impressive. But it was in the loose where he was most destructive, making yards with ball in hand and owning the opposition in defence.... he must surely be a candidate for standout player of the northern hemisphere?
Try scorers for the Georgians in no particular order were: Dewsnip, Weaving, Tasker (yes, he really did!) Corner x2(again, yes he really did!) and Roberts. Roberts also kicked 3 conversions and 2 penalties for a personal haul of 17 points.
Butchers of the day go to 32 and Kenny Basteraud, who both contrived to somehow not score when a try looked by far the simpler option. Old Roberts only just escapes this mantle as he is writing the report.
Man of the match has to go to Corner who was genuinely magnificent all game. Special mentions also go to Old man Tasker for making like Tinnie Tempah and getting a passout, Z.Carlos for a great game at 10 and Lil' Botts making his debut at number 14. His age and slight frame bely a great skillset and he didnt shirk the contact area.
Also a mention to Mal the referee who turned up unannounced and stood in when the match official didn't arrive.
The match of course was rearranged due to the nasty injury sustained by Ben Wright in the earlier fixture. It's good to report that Ben is on the road to recovery and is confident of playing against the Georgians next season.
Next sees the final match of the season as the Georgians entertain Wharfedale at Claro Road. This fixture sees first play second in the Yorkshire Merit Table Premier League and the winners will win take the spoils. Harrogate are unbeaten in 17 but wharfedale are the olde enemy.
