Brigade get stuck in the mud in Seaham

Brigade made the relatively short journey up the a19 with a full squad and high hopes of a first victory in a while.

Anthony Egglestone came back into the squad at flanker, with Brigade also able to name Dave Hetherington at centre and the returning Liam Johnson starting at full back.

After a trek through the woods and over rivers to get to the pitch Brigade were ready to go, unfortunately the same could not be said for the pitch, with the flags and post protectors nowhere to be seen. Following a twenty minute delay the post protectors and flags arrived and the game was able to start. Brigade kicked off, on a pitch where flippers and snorkels would have been more apt than rugby boots and gumshields, but it was Seaham who started the brighter their backs keen to spread the ball wide at every opportunity. Only strong defence, with Hetherington and Evans outstanding all afternoon, kept Seaham at bay.

Gorman was shown yellow for repeated high tackles, his defence of "it would be ok in rugby league" falling on deaf ears. The pressure told and 14 man brigade conceded two converted tries just before half time. At the break Egglestone reminded the players of the importance of building phases and was keen for the forwards to take on more work.

The injured Groom was withdrawn for Scotchford, with Southgate making way for Pickering. Brigade started the second half with the intensity they had been missing in the first, with Gorman, Egglestone and Scotchford all keen to get their hands on the ball. Egglestone was first to score for Brigade, taking the ball at the lineout and going through the defence to score. Corkin hit the post from the resulting conversion.

Brigade then emptied there bench, with Price coming on for his rugby debut and Maslen coming on in the centre. Brigade took the kick off and fought their way back up the pitch. Arnell was judged to have been held up over the line, much to the disbelief of the players around him, however from the resulting scrum the ball was sent along the line for Hetherington to crash over, with the conversion missed again.

At 14-10 it was game on and Brigade could smell blood, however Seaham, through quality kicks from their full back pinned Brigade back in their 22. Seaham managed another three scores before full time with it finishing 33-10. The players gave their all, with fitness and organisation the difference between the two teams. Attention now turns to next week, with Brigade on the road again, this time visiting Houghton.
