A 2-0 defeat to Esh Winning means Pool crash out of the Durham Challenge Cup with goals in the seventeenth minute and in the last minute enough for the hosts.
Lax, however, reacted to the result in upbeat fashion, declaring: "That was brilliant. Absolutely brilliant. I'm as proud as punch," he told www.Hartlepool-FC.co.uk
"They grafted their nuts off for ninety minutes and they have by no means disgraced themselves against a team at the top of the Northern League Division Two.
"They (Esh) didn't cause any problems really, they had two shots in the first half and then nicked one at the end. We had a few breakaways in the first half but didn't throw men forward," he explained.
"In the second half we had four, five chances but blazed them over. We matched them everywhere, though, and as I say I'm as proud as punch."
Lax gave Shaun Atkinson the duty of leading the line in a 4-5-1 formation, and he was bowled over by the striker's performance after so long out injured: "He was outstanding. Unbelievable. He ran himself into the ground.
"But everyone was, they were all man of the match - they've all done so well for the club. If we keep this up, this commitment, things will only get better.
"Kris Summers played centre midfield because I've always felt he is a better midfielder than defender. He stepped up to the cause and was outstanding. He was given a specific role and he did it - but then they all did."
A place in the semis awaited the winner and although it is Esh who join Gateshead, Billingham Town and Spennymoor, Lax remains chuffed with the effort: "It is frustrating, of course, but I'm so proud.
