Last week we caught up with new signing Phil Stevenson for a feature in our latest Match Day Programme.

Position: Back Row / Hooker

Previous Clubs: Ballymena RFC, Durham University

Sponsor: N/A

Nickname: Derry

Phil joined us at the start of the 2017/18 season following his appointment as a teacher at Brougham Primary School.

Hailing from Ballymena in Northern Ireland he is a recent graduate of Durham University where he studied Primary Education.

You have only been with us for a short time but what are your thoughts on the Club so far?

I’m really enjoying my time at the club. It’s very passionate and we get a great crowd every week home or away. Everyone has been so friendly and welcoming which has been great. There’s no doubt in my mind that I chose the best club in Hartlepool.

You’ve made a great impact in establishing yourself in the squad and scoring a couple of tries for the 1st XV. What are your hopes for the season?

First off I just want to get back on the pitch again after a few weeks out. Our form has dropped a little in recent weeks, but we’re definitely still in a strong position to kick on and challenge for promotion. That would be the main goal, and to enjoy our rugby while we’re at it.

You know you’ve made it in any team once you have a nickname. Can you explain how ‘Derry’ came about?

As I joined the club there was a very funny video doing the rounds of an Irish fella named Derry trying to catch a bat in his kitchen. I think it was Jack Richardson who decided this should be my nickname and it’s stuck.

How are you enjoying the Hartlepool night life?

Thankfully the lads have taken me under their wing and have shown me the wonders of town on a Saturday night. It‘s interesting! I can think of no better way of spending my Saturday night than annoying Neil & Tom Stead!

Favourite rugby player:
Schalk Brits or Michael Hooper

Best rugby moment:
Making my 1st XV debut for Ballymena back home. I’ve played there since I was 5.

Most embarrassing rugby moment:
Getting nutmegged by a grubber kick!

Who would play you in a film of your life?
Liam Neeson - good Ballymena lad!
