Hartlepool Rovers continue to work their way up the table and they are 4th in Durham Northumberland One after this 39-20 victory over Ryton.

Another five tries, including a penalty try for a try ‘saving’ tackle on Ian Coulson, keeps the bonus point total ticking over and it’s now five from six games.

Stockton at Station Road are up next for Rovers and who went down to a heavy 55-12 defeat at Guisborough as the Whites were coming out on top at the New Friarage.

Rovers had got off to a quick start last week at Novos but went behind 7-0 in the 2nd minute on Saturday when Andy Gabel crossed, Lewis Barr adding the extra points.

Michael Barnfield pulled three points back with a drop goal after 7 minutes with Jack Gunn then going in at the right hand corner flag after good approach play and then a tap penalty charge by Kevin Maguire and Rovers led 8-7.

Barr regained the lead for Ryton on 32 minutes with a 27 metre penalty with Chris Sainty just missing with a penalty of his own from 32 metres.

Some good passing along the backline by the Friaragemen looked to have put Ian Coulson for a try only for him to be high-tackled by Alex Colbeck and Mr Mackings awarded a penalty try, Sainty converting.

A couple of long stoppages meant that there were six minutes of extra time and Sainty put over a penalty with the last play of the half to make it 18-10 to Rovers at the break.

Ryton pulled five points back after 46 minutes when, with Michael Tucker in the sin bin, the numerical advantage in the forwards saw Andrew Rodenby score from an attacking lineout.

Rovers still led 18-15 and needed to score next and did so on 53 minutes when Michael Foster dived over the line under the posts at the clubhouse end, Sainty’s conversion made the lead now 25-15.

A great backs move across the pitch saw Liam Austwicke take the tackle and pass on to Lee Maddison who had an easy drop over the line. Sainty kicked an excellent conversion from the touchline and the lead had increased to 32-15.

Some of the good work was undone when Colin Coulson crossed but another try for the Whites followed on 70 minutes when Austwicke finished off another slick passing move, Michael Barnfield this time kicking the conversion.
