Narrow loss in opening game

Rovers Heughers went down to a narrow 7-3 loss to West Stags in their opening Candy League game

The match was close and hard fought with both defences prominent and cancelling each other out; especially in the backs. Rovers struggled a bit to get good first phase possession from scrums or lineouts but did very well in the loose and frequently made ground or turned over ball.

The only scores were in the first half. Rovers took the lead with a penalty from Ryan Harrison but West had a good period of pressure and their prop went over for converted try. Both teams missed penalties in the second half but despite lots of effort scoring chances were few.

Ian Flounders did well at prop and was still mobile about the park. Connor White deserves praise for getting off his sick bed to put a good half till he went off to spew up! Credit also to 50 odd year old Mick Connor who got an unexpected call at 2.15 to fill the full back role. And he did not look out of place. Mick's man of the match though was Liam Wood. A good choice as Liam was everywhere. He made the most yards for Rovers, frequently surging away from rucks or mauls. He also tackled anything that moved and turned over much ball.

One advantage West did have was hordes of replacements, as their 3rds and Colts game were cancelled. Rovers had 2 subs which is disappointing to say the least given the amount of players who said they would turn up.

An oddity of the game was that there were 2 sets of brothers playing against each other - the Jefferys and the Fleets. Don't think I have come across that before
