West 5 - Rovers 43

by Ian Smith

Rovers overcome more local opposition

Rovers overcame West 4ths/Ams 43-5 at Brinkburn.

Rovers started kicking into the fairly strong wind on the first XV pitch at Brinkburn and quickly got into their West counterparts. Jamie Montgomery showed some good touches with ball in hand and it was he that opened the scoring by breaking up the left wing. This was followed by try under the posts by Ian Mulvhill converted by Paul Arnell. Next to score was Michael Rennie who drove over following good Rovers pressure. At half time the score was 19-0 to Rovers

With the benefit of the wind it was expected that Rovers would then take charge but we were pretty flat and did not even get into the West 22 for the first quarter of an hour of the second half by which time West had made the most of their possession by pulling one try back with a good try out wide. When Rovers did get field position though they were much more clinical in making it count and scored another 5 unanswered tries in the second half. Ian Mulvhill got two more for a hat trick and fellow centre Monty got another. Davy Carroll also scored after a bullocking run but I have to confess I hadn’t noted who got the other try. If it was you please post “! With 2 conversions by Daz Fawcett and one by Squid McGuire that left a final score of 43-5.

In truth it wasn’t a classic with the ref seeming to blow up at nearly every breakdown and making the game too stop and start. On the plus side Simon Hall had a good run out for about 50 minutes and showed he still has a lot to offer.. AJ Jeffries at 17 years and a couple of days had a fine debut at full back being both safe in defence and cool when attacking. Man of the match though was fellow U17 Monty who had his best game yet particularly in attack where he frequently made ground.

We have done quite well against teams from Hartlepool and District this season beating West 4ths, Seaton and Old Boys (though they have also won a return game) from the Tees Valley League as well as Brigade and Horden in non league games. Our sternest test though will come this Wednesday in the inaugural Pyman Shield when we travel once again to West but this time to play the Bucks who must start favourites being in the League above us and heading the table for nearly all the season – though it looks like Acklam have snuck ahead at the weekend. Still we will give it a lash with whatever team we put out.
