Full round up of all last weekends action

The weekend started on Thursday night for the Colliery as the worlds oldest football club Sheffield FC paid a visit to the Jones and Co recreational ground for the under twenty one league game. The away side had beaten the the young Colliery side four two a few weeks earlier so they knew what to expect. Bren was back on the touch line after missing the previous weeks encounter, and the lads started well by taking the game to Sheffield. Eventually it was, the impressive on the night, Kyle Drury who opened the scoring with a fine finish. It really should have been three before the break as two glorious chances went begging. Firstly Drury put in a cross from the right which took out the keeper and found Marley Alder but his goal bound effort was blocked by the last defender. Drury then again put in another cross that found Alder six yards out but with only the keeper to beat he put his effort wide. The visitors improved after the break, and it took a superb save from young Callum Robinson to keep the scores on level terms. Due to the late kick off I had to leave half way through the second half, but I was told Robinson had an excellent game to keep a clean sheet, and Alder was rewarded for getting into those goal scoring positions, heading home the second and sealing a fine victory. Another outstanding victory for our under twenty ones who travel to Handsworth Parramore on Wednesday night looking to keep up their fine form.

The Colliery 1st team faced the only side to have beaten them in the league this season in the 3rd round of the league cup, but there was no danger of a repeat as the home side cruised into the quarter finals. Inside the first three minutes Sam Caygill, Jordan Woodhall and Josh Davies all had chances that just missed the target, but the away side could only hold out for eight minutes as Davies and Sean Mundy combined to set up Lee Holmes for his 21st goal of the season. On twenty minutes Jack Conley went on a solo run and unleashed an unstoppable shot past the town keeper. Any hopes of a comeback were dashed on the half hour as Holmes capitalised on a defensive mistake to walk the ball into an empty net. It got even better on forty minutes as Sam Caygill got a fourth with a shot drilled past the keeper, and a scintillating first half performance was completed by Mundy as he turned home a Holmes cross from the right. The visitors tried to make a game of it in the second half, but on fifty five Mundy got his second and the Colliery’s sixth after fine work by Sam Westerman. No more goals after this as the Derbyshire side tried to snatch a consolation, but fine defensive work by Jordan Hardman, Woodhall, James Woodward and Westerman made sure the home side kept a clean sheet, and progressed to the next round.
A great win then for the team, I never thought that I would be writing about a six nil win over Clay Cross. It’s been long over due, nearly six years, but what a way to end the hoodoo. A special mention for Woody and young Jordan Woodhall, who kept the prolific goal scoring partnership of Cay and Lynam quiet all afternoon, it’s always the goal scorers who take the plaudits, but I thought those two were outstanding and to say that they have never played together you never would have guessed.
The firsts are back in action on Saturday, in league action against Phoenix.

Unfortunately the Ladies game on Sunday was abandoned due to a serious injury
