A beautiful March Spring day saw Hawks face Blues for a League showdown. The competition against Blues is notoriously fierce and today was to prove no exception.
Despite a good warm up Hawks were taken off guard early in the game. A few fast drives from the draw saw Blues take an early lead and it soon became apparent that winning the draw was going to be the key to winning this game. Rather than be despondent the Hawks defence re-grouped, identified the most dangerous players and stuck tight.
The next few draws were all ours as Becky fought tirelessly on the defence wing. This made an immediate difference to the game. This, coupled with some excellent team play down the pitch and quick moves in the attack created some fantastic goal scoring opportunities which were capitalised on brilliantly by Nic, Tiff and Claud.
The first half remained tight, our defence was now settled and turning the ball over continuously. Nat was making some great saves and the intensity of play from Hawks was some of the best seen all season. The early goals from Blues gave them the edge going into half time with a 2 goal lead, 8-6.
The Hawks girls were definitely in no mood to lose this game. Energy levels were high and our desire to win against Blues was off the scale. Taking this energy into the second half enabled Hawks to up the pressure on Blues. The Hawks defence was solid, loads of communication, tight marking and great slides made scoring tough. Even when Blues got a shot on it was saved by Nat who had a blinding game in goal.
After the turnover in defence, the support throughout midfield was excellent. We passed early and created the space in attack. We even had some picks, isolations and draw and dump – all the training is starting to slot in to our match play!
Having brought the game to 10-10, the pressure was intense and second half Hawks were on a roll. Controversially, Blues called a stick check on Claud at 11-10 and the goal was disallowed. Hawks were not happy and only 5 minutes remained to secure victory.
To our frustration Blues used this opportunity to put 1 more goal past our defence giving them the edge with 2 minutes to go. HOWEVER, this was no time to give up and some solid team play throughout the pitch gave Hawks total control and a beautiful last minute equaliser.
Final score 11-11. Great Team performance. We’ll get them next year
