Hawks v Blues (League) – Sunday 15th January 2012
The first match of 2012 was always going to have high expectations. As an Olympic year, sport is at the forefront of everyone's mind. As usual Hawks rose to the challenge, with a brilliant warm up by Miss Bohane, memories of the night before had quickly past. We were focused and ready.
The familiar whistle blew and we were off, although we didn't score the first goal we certainly came out extremely strong taking back the lead quickly with great transition and use of the width.
The mid field did a great job of turning over possesion with some excellent ground balls, in particular from Michelle and Katie (must have been the warm up). The centre draws were a strongly faught contest with Hawks coming out top most of the time. When blues finally made it down into their attack our defence were solid as a rock, with great communication and some fantastic saves by Nat.
It was a draw at the end of the first half, with everything to play for. We had Blues rattling in their boots and their lacrosse socks around their ankles in anticipation, as to what lay waiting for them in the second half...
As the sun shone in Nat's eyes the whistle blew. Everyone slowed and stood firm. A little too firm as the ball seemed to move in slow motion towards their goal. It didn't matter, we were only one down and we still had the whole of the second half to go.
Great communication by Debs lead to some speedy drop backs by the mid field and some fantastic rides meant we turned over possession on several occasions proving that the D-UNIT definitely are a force to be reckoned with. With great assists from Michelle and goals from Lara we started winning it back.
Unfortunately it wasn't quite enough and the score line didn't end exactly how we had planned. However, we had many other successes and showed true team spirit throughout and made some great decisions in defense and attack that made for some bloody good lacrosse. If we work on fitness to keep up the intensity in the second half we'll get them next time!
Final score 10-13
Great assists from: Michelle, Gemma and Katie
Goals from: Lara 3, Tiff 3, Nic 2 and Claud 2
