FELIXSTOWE AND WALTON UNITED 2 HAVERHILL ROVERS 1
Having failed to capitalise on a lot of first half play Felixstowe eventually took all three points with a second half sending off being the pivotal moment of the match.
THURLOW NUNN LEAGUE PREMIER DIVISION
Away goalkeeper James Philp
was at hand to deny Nick Ingram, who hit a shot well from 35 yards out, and Ethan Clarke with a shot from the edge of the area before the hosts broke through after 34 minutes, a collision on the edge of the area between two players did not lead to a free kick and the ball was put in waist high to the far left post through a crowd of players, Rhys Barber stealing in to find the net and collide with the post afterwards.
Haverhill’s only solid chance of the half gave them an equaliser in the 43rd minute, Luke Haines’ 35 yard free kick going in the near right post, home ‘keeper Danny Crump getting a hand to it but he was only able to put it on to the inside of the post and for it to find the net.
After the break Haverhill looked the better side for the opening quarter of an hour, Jordan Palmer heading Marc Abbott’s cross into the ground and over shortly before the end of this period.
On 61 minutes the tide began to turn, away captain Sam Holmes going off with a suspected broken nose but carrying on despite the injury; unfortunately, within moments of him returning to the field, his side found themselves harshly down to ten men, Palmer bringing down Callum Bennett just outside the area as he tried to pull out of a challenge; although the ball seemed to be going to safety, Palmer was shown a red card.
Haverhill held on as much as they could but, on 80 minutes, their resistance was broken, a free kick from the right not being fully cleared and Jordy Matthews hit the ball first time from 12 yards out through a crowd of players and found the bottom right corner past a rooted Philp.
There was still time for Haverhill to hit back, Haines’ free kick near the right bye line five minutes later causing chaos but Crump was able to get a hand to it and take it away from the far top left corner.
