The away side edged ahead with just five minutes on the watch, home goalkeeper Kingsley Barnes’ foot stopping Ryan Weaver from scoring at the near post from an acute angle; however, from the resulting Luke Haines corner kick, Marcus Hunt’s header took a slight deflection, Barnes spilled the ball and Sam Holmes slid in to put Ross Bailey’s attempted clearance into the roof of the net.
Three minutes into first half added time Haverhill netted for a second time via a counter attack, Harry Halls finding Weaver, the latter moving out towards the right from a central position before giving the ball to Oliver Stevenson; the ball became loose but Danny Hill took advantage and hit a controlled volley into the bottom left corner with the penultimate kick of the half.
Thetford looked the better side in the closing stages with their opponents holding strong with the home crowd getting restless.
A tense finish was set up on 82 minutes when all three home substitutes combined for a goal, a long throw from Ryan Fuller not being fully cleared, Bruno Tavares mishit his shot into the ground and Jordan Attree guided the ball past ‘keeper Charlie Turner.
The ball went across the Haverhill six yard box in added time, the ball being put back in and Robbie Priddle headed agonisingly wide for the hosts in their best chance before the final whistle.
