Rugby's true values to the fore as Heath lend players to 13 man St Francis...

What was a difficult week for Heath after the Clubhouse suffered significant damage following a break in, ended on a much better note with rugby's true values to the fore as the Rams played their re-arranged league match against St Francis RFC. A lot of hard work from stalwart club volunteers and local businesses meant that the Clubhouse was able to reopen after repairs were carried out following the break in, allowing the league game to proceed and the club to show the latest round of 6 Nations matches.

An in form Rams side coming off the back of recent cup and league wins were in confident mood as they took on local club St Francis and it was clear from the outset that the visitors were going to be in for a difficult afternoon as after a couple of late drop outs they arrived with only 13 men. However in true rugby tradition a couple of extras were borrowed from the Heath ranks in the shape of Club Treasurer Dave Grimley and Club Captain Kevin McDonald so the sides were able to get the game underway. The young Rams side featuring a number of teenage colts set out their game plan of running rugby from the outset and with quick hands and a high tempo were quickly on top stretching out to a 33-0 lead at half time . Notwithstanding the score line, the game was hard fought and evenly matched for long periods of time but the pace of the home side meant they held the advantage. The Rams were able to ring the changes and try some new personnel in the second half and by the final whistle had secured the bonus point win with a 53-0 win. Although it was a conclusive win for Heath both sides enjoyed the run out and ended up watching the 6 Nations together in the Clubhouse bar after the game. The Chairman of St Francis RFC was quick to congratulate Heath not on their victory but on their commitment to the true ethos of grassroots rugby by lending the opposition two players for the afternoon – allowing both teams to play the game they love.

Next weekend sees the Heath 1st XV return to action at home against Park House and the Rams hosting Burgess Hill 2s.
