This reporter left early in the morning in glorious sunshine to attend the game. The weather had changed substantially by kick off and the game started in heavy wind and rain.
Colfeians arrived at the ground only 15minutes before kick off due to bad traffic en route. The game still managed to commence with less than a 5minute delay to kick off. Straight away Heath looked bright and energetic and soon took play up to the Colfeians 22 from a series of rucks and mauls. It looked like an early try was on the cards and indeed it was. Colfeians managed to turnover the ball and their winger spotted and gap and ran through. His legs opened up and he ran most of the length of the pitch to score under the posts. This try was duly converted to take Heath into a 7 point deficit with only 6 minutes played.
Heath restarted brightly and took play back into the Colfeians half. Colfs pushed play back inside the Heath half and managed to take it to the Heath 22. Jack Lucas
found himself with the ball and played out past a couple of opposition players. He spotted Matt Goddard
to his right and passed the ball out to him. Goddard then showed great athleticism to break through defence on the half way line and run half the pitch to score under the posts. This was converted by Jenkins to take the score to 7 all with just 11minutes played.
Heath continued to look bright and were unfortunate on several occasions to have attacks fail due to the atrocious conditions. The wind was getting wilder and the rain was getting heavier. Heath had a penalty in front of the posts after 25 minutes which they failed to convert as the wind carried the ball wide.
Just before half time Heath had some solid pressure on the Colfeians line. Phase after phase, ruck after ruck, Heath couldn’t find a way past a brave Colfeians defence. Heath won a penalty and decided to take it quickly. Again Colfeians stood firm and cleared. Owain Jenkins
received the ball close to the 22 and took a clever chip into the dead ball area. Huw Jenkins
ran onto it and was very unlucky not to score. On a dryer day that would surely have been a try.
The second half kicked off with the scores even. The wind was beginning to die down a little bit but the rain continued to fall. 8 minutes into the second half and Heath were pushing forward. Sam Drage
was the player to score next. He received the ball from the back of a ruck and pressed through to score. Only a couple of minutes later Colfeians had a chance. Their left-winger received the ball onto the win deep into Heath territory. He ran past two men to score. Neither try was converted meaning the scores were still level at 12 all.
As the last home game of the season Heath were keen to go out brightly in front of home support. 17 minutes into the second half and some solid Heath pressure gave Joe Feldman
the ball in the corner. He showed great composure to ground the ball under pressure. The wind made this a difficult attempt at goal for Owain Jenkins
and although he came close only 5 points were added to the Heath tally.
30 minutes into the second half and Heath scored their final try of the day. Some more fine work from the Heath forwards allowed the Heath backs clean ball from the back of a ruck. Matt Goddard
was the final man to receive the ball and crashed over the line for his second try. This was converted to take the score to 24 -12.
The scores remained the same until full time. A solid win for Heath along with a bonus point. Colfeians, already relegated, will play in London 2 next season. It was a game played in excellent spirits and excellently refereed by Sussex referee Iain Mitchell. Next week sees Heath travel to Wimbledon in their final game of the season.
