6 Wicket Clifton helps HCC stay top
After miserable week weather wise, and the pitch looking pretty soggy at Friday ‘tea time’, Glen Road was in remarkable condition for the visit of near neighbours Old Modernians.
Lewis Gomersal the visiting skipper called wrong, and HCC skipper Mark Stelfox invited them to have a bat, Old Modernians opened with Jay Atkinson and former Leeds United legend and England keeper and Cornish Schoolboys cricketer Nigel Martyn. HCC opened with Ifty Hussain from the Kevin Manton End and Amjad Khan from the Sewage Works End and a decent battled started to unfold, the bowlers keeping it tight, the batsmen looking organized and cashing in on anything loose , Ifty was the first to strike, bowling Atkinson.
Kent and Martyn kept Old Mods moving forward albeit at a slow rate as the bowlers kept it tight, and Martyn was 2nd to go clean bowled by Amjad. Will Clifton and Chris St Clair Whicker were introduced to the HCC and Will found the edge of Kent’s bat in his first over and Ifty pouched it at 2nd Slip, with the score at 44-3 the Heavens and Umpire Greenfield directed the players towards the sheds, and an early tea was taken.
Play was resumed shortly after tea, and it was HCC who were quickest back out of the blocks as Clifton took 2 wickets in the first over back disposing of James Towse LBW and next ball skipper Lewis Gomersall played an injudicious shot and offered up a routine catch to the impressive Tony Williams., Whicker got in on the act getting rid of French thanks to a good running catch from Amjad Khan
Dave Clarke briefly rallied hitting Clifton for a huge high 6 onto the bowling green which saw Skipper Stelfox run flat out into the hedge demolishing the scoreboard in the process, Clifton kept chipping away with wickets sending back Clarke, Macintosh and Sleeman, and the final wicket came thanks to a run out as Old Mods finished 68 all out. Clifton taking 6-22 off his 12, Ifty going for just 8 runs off his 10 (despite bowling on one leg and off 3 yards for the bulk of his spell), and Whicker going for just 9 off his 9 overs
Steve Manton and Chris St Clair Whicker opened for HCC and both looked relatively untroubled despite and enthusiastic attack from Old Mods but both perished within a couple of runs of each other both lofting high chances that were well caught be the Old Mods fielders, Jim Hinks and Andrew Filipowicz settled any nerves in the HCC camp and moved the score along steadily, Filo looking at something like his best dispatching a huge hooked 6 towards Glen Road, Jim departed with the score on 45 and Tony Williams joined Filo to safely navigate the Glen Road club home to a 7 wicket win with Filo finishing on 33 not out.
