Alwoodley match report
Headingley run Alwoodley close
Headingley hosted local neighbours and aire-wharfe side Alwoodley following a beautiful night of karaoke at the Village Hotel. Skipper Knight was presumably still suffering from Steve Bindmans Elvis cover which put him off his tossing, at which he came a valiant second place.
Alwoodley decided to bat first and HCC opened up with Matthew Marshall and Steve Costello (non-strawpedo cossie). The spin kings started fairly well at the young opening pair of Fern and Causey. The opening pair combined to take the first wicket, Steve Costello taking the catch near the leg side boundary from Marshalls bowling, although there were certainly some "suspicious minds" as costello stumbled his may to the ball.
The wicket brought Alwoodleys resident marsupial (every club has to have at least one) Nathan Roberts to the crease. Roberts did not hang around as he set about smashing the spinners all about glen road. This brought about the first bowling change, with Matty Williams and Liam Geddis bowling some tight overs to keep the runs down as best possible. Matty ended up with 2 wickets for 22 and pidge with 23 for none, both off 8 overs. Roberts retired and Iota was sent back without facing a ball following a sharp runout by Matt Kermode. Matt Manley replaced Geddis from the waterworks end and started off well, supported by skipper knight from the other end. Manley was first to make the breakthrough, taking the wicket of J Fern, assisted by a fantastic stumping by Ian Rogers. Knight provided some varied pace (as well as line and length) from the other end, enough to bring a few chances that were unfortunately dropped by Williams, Costello and Rogers. In a similar vain of misfortune batsman Shahid got struck in the hangdowns from a very slow short shat of a ball from Knight, more unfortunate was his decision not to wear a box. Apparently they were "all shook up". Having suitably intimidated (injured) the opposition Knight finally got a wicket and Matt Manley also profited, ending up with a very creditable 3 for 22 runs off 6.
After some delicious teas provided by Matthew Kermode, Liam Geddis and Fahad Jabar opened the batting and were clearly in the mood for "A little less conversation" as the score went into the 40's. It was the first bowling change that brought wickets, with Will Clifton protege James Wilson coming on from the sewage works end and bowling a similar line, length and economy. After getting a good start Fahad made his way back to the pavilion for 20 following a sharp stumping by the Alwoodley Keeper. Rogers joined Geddis in the middle but only added 6 before "returning to sender" off the bowling of Wilson. Geddis fell to the same man for 32. If Matty Williams depended on his batting performance to get him the ladies he would have been "lonesome tonight", falling for an uncharacteristic duck from the bowling of Roberts. This brought Steve Costello and Matt Kermode to the crease, although both went cheaply. Club granny-slayer Steve Manton came in at number 8 and began to up the rate with some sensible batting, picking off the two's and playing the manton shat with vigour. Those around him continued to lose their wickets, Knight going for a duck and Matt Marshall and the returning Tony Boucher both going for 3 as Manton ticked along at the other end. Matt Manley came in last man and it was "now or never". Manley batted sensibly with Manton who was ticking the scoreboard over at a good rate. Unfortunately the target was "always on his mind" and he fell clean bowled for 4 runs. "Heartbreak Hotel" for Headingley CC.
