Nick Saunders inspires Headingley A to victory in final game for club
Headingley A continue promotion push at Green Hammerton
Headingley A maintained their promotion push with victory at Green Hammerton A, in Nick Saunders final game for the club.
Former Headingley star and multiple duck-race winner Matt Frosdick travalled up from Brighton specially to see the spectacle.
Rob Smyth was given the honour of captaining the side against his former club, and the team he used to captain.
Smyth lost the toss, and Green Hammerton chose to bat.
Joe Gazzard and Joe Franklin opened the attack, and it didn't take long for a breakthrough, Joe Franklin removing opener Paul Harker, caught behind by Dan Fletcher with the score on 4.
Both bowlers bowled well with little reward, and it was the first change that brought the next wicket.
Nick Saunders, in a rich vein of form was playing his last game for HCC and took a wicket with his first ball, removing Steve Kelm, caught by Joe Gazzard with the score on 31.
One brought two as Manav Shah removed Vivek Upahdyay, smartly caught at mid-on by Robert Willey.
Nick Saunders took the next 3 wickets, Ben Harden caught by Matt Manley, Sushil Sharda bowled and Adam Johnson trapped LBW.
It was a typically tight and effective spell from Saunders (and one which obviously included a no-ball), and he was unlucky not to sign off with a 5 wicket haul, as he finished with figures of 4 for 24 from 12 overs.
As Headingley looked to bowl out Green Hammerton, Joe Gazzard and Joe Franklin were brought back in to the attack, and Gazzard quickly struck, bowling Steve Wray, leaving the hosts on 77 for 7.
As Headingley were running out of overs, Smyth turned to Robert Willey to try and force a breakthrough.
Goldenarm duly delivered, trapping Ben Phelps LBW off an expert filthy long-hop.
As the fielders surrounded the bat, Willey struck again, Matt Manley taking a very sharp catch close in, leaving HCC needing 1 wicket off the final ball.
Cue Nick Saunders last contribution in a Headingley shirt, his belly straying behind the umpire on the leg side. With 2 men already behind the umpire, a no-ball was called, giving Headingley another chance to claim the last wicket. Alas it wasn't to be as Green Hammerton finished on 117 for 9 from 45 overs.
Skipper Rob Smyth opened the batting with Joe Gazzard and mid-week specialist Mike Knight.
Knight was first to depart, unluckily playing on, although the combination of wicket-keeper and Steve Kelm's man boobs played a big part!
Dan Fletcher was next in, and assisted Joe Gazzard as the big man looked to finish the job in speedy fashion.
The pair put on 57 before Gazzard was trapped LBW by Ben Phelps.
Fahad Jabbar continued in a similar fashion to Gazzard, hitting a succession of boundaries in a quickfire 34, before going for a big shot with just one needed for victory. Unfortunately he didn't get hold of it and was caught off the bowling of Paul Harker, after putting on 58 with Dan Fletcher.
Mohammed Ishfaq was next in, and went for a big hit to finish the game in style. Unfortunately he didn't quite get hold of it but the catch was not taken and Headingley got the run needed, to win with 118 for 3 from 23.2 overs, Dan Fletcher batting well for 22 not out.
Man of the match - Nick Saunders
A special mention and big thank you has to go to Nick Saunders, who has put in a tremendous amount of work behind the scenes, not to mention all the free coaching he has given every single player at the club (whether they have liked it or not), his unbelievable knowledge of every single rule within the Wetherby League rule book, his wheeling and dealing of cheap cricket gear and general passion and enthusiasm for the game.
Good luck to Nick and the Saunders clan, and we look forward to a tour next season to give his new team a hammering!
