Heather clinch top spot of the MJPL league....

Heather Lions clinched the top spot of the MJPL league with an excellent 5-2 away win on stafford rangers ground.

The match was played on the seniors 1st team pitch which was very good of our hosts to facilitate. With both teams having played each other over the years and already once this season those watching knew that both sets of players would try and get the ball down and play. The match started off with a good tempo with both teams adjusting to the full size pitch and for the first twenty minutes chances were few and pretty even. However it was Heather who were first to break the deadlock when confusion in the stafford defence allowed Mcleary to take advantage and finish well to give the lions a one nil lead. The lead was only to last a few minutes as a wayward pass from Warren went to the home forward who fired home for an equaliser. Heather reacted well to gradually take control as the first half went on and managed to start to get the ball down and play. From a phase of play down Heathers left good play between Harrington and Holmes allowed Holmes to force his way into the box and set up Mcleary to stroke the ball into the net for his and the teams second. Heather then pressed for a further goal and with a quick attack Holmes again found himself picking up the ball with a one on one with the full back to go around him and jink the ball over the advancing keeper to send them in at half time with a 3-1 lead.

The second half began with heather reacting slowly to a through ball from deep and hesitation allowed the stafford forward to calmly strike the ball into the back of the net to reduce the scoreline. Heather reacted with a slight formation change and this allowed them to take control of the game and push stafford back forcing a number of corners and quick attacking play. It was from one of these corners that a powering header from Goodwin struck the bar with Holmes quickest to react to poke the ball home and give the boys a 4-1 lead. Stafford found it difficult to get back into the game and excellent play from defence and midfield restricted their attacking opportunities. Heather continued to press forward and a through ball from the hardworking Mcleary found Holmes with a foot race between himself, defender and keeper unfortunately for the home keeper he took his eye off the ball and allowed Holmes to run the ball into an empty net to round off the game and his hat trick with a 5-2 win and see them finish top of the MJPL league for the season.

Heather round off the season with a home game against Solihull on saturday 29th April with a 10:30am Kick off.
