This weekend HMG under 12s faced their toughest game of the season so far when they came up against a full strength Stockport team who are top contenders for this season’s cup competition.
As the first quarter started the nerves and the challenge ahead seemed to be getting the better of us and Stockport took a convincing lead. A tactical time out and some passionate words seem to work for the better… the teams new motto was to enjoy the game and score goals if and when the opportunity arose.
The second quarter saw HMG transformed, and not only did the goals start coming but continued to come for the rest of the game, some brilliant defence and hard fought midfield work followed by some of the best attack we have played this year saw us stealing the ball and placing it in our attack.
Jordan and Oliver linked up in attack to score a fantastic goal with a very well timed give and go…. Oliver driving the ball down the field and before coming up against the fierce Stockport defence passed the ball off to an unmarked Jordan but with some quick slides Jordan was soon covered… but Oliver had kept going from the top of the restraining area and Jordan passed in a hard flat pass Oliver plucked the ball out of the air on the move and placed into the back of the net!!! One of the best goals I have seen scored by a junior side.
As the final quarter started the combination of a tough game some hard knocks and the realisation we probably weren’t going to win saw our performance take a dip… Once again a time out was required, spirits and motivation lifted we carried on driving hard, passing well and fighting for the ball all over the field and as time wound down we had taken our tally to 9 whilst Stockport’s had reached 18 where both scores remained until the final whistle.
A loss but it very much felt like a win… not only had we competed against one of the best teams in the U12s but we had scored more goals past them than any other team this season, by not 1, not 2, not 3 but 4 goals!!! I wonder what the score might have been if our first quarter had gone better, I would also like to note that even though we were on the receiving end of some extremely hard and occasionally misplaced challenges we did not concede one foul throughout the entire game… Well done boys your coaches could not be more proud… keep up the good work!!!
In other games this weekend the SMG U16s team took on Wacs in the first round of the cup... a challenge it seemed that although very well fought was a step to far for a young U16s team. This does however mean they will now compete in the plate competition... Well done lads keep fighting hard.
Saturday also saw Oldham visit HMG and although the men fought hard, Oldham were a well drilled team determined to see off their competition, resulting in a loss for the HMG team.
