The U9s welcomed Broughton Park for the second time this year and having secured a draw in the final minutes of the last match knew they were in for a tough game. Broughton Park arrived with some familiar faces and a new recruit by the name of Dante who was a handful for the Heaton Moor players throughout the morning.
The first quarter set a marker for the game with both teams showing tenacity in defence, determination in the rucks and mauls and speed and agility in attack. Our captain, Luke, opened the scoring with a typical run feigning to go on the inside before stepping on the gas and scorng in the left corner. Broughton Park equalised before Peter picked up the ball and crashed through the centre to touch down. The quarter ended with Moor taking a slender 2-1 lead.
The second quarter belonged to Park who stamped their authority on the game with 3 fine tries. The pick of their players was Donte who was strong in the mauls and even a match for Sam. They had fine runners in theo and Owen. Moor kept the score down with some strong tackling from Hanuf, Thonas and Oliver Mckie. Towards the end of the quarter Oliver Jones scored one of his trademark tries crashing through 3 players to get to the line. Park had established a 4-3 lead.
The third quarter was an even spell with both teams scoring a single try, Moor's try from the ever present Sam who dived over the line at full stretch. Louis Nolan and Alex continue to improve and both showed increasing strength in the mauls and both had strong runs with ball in hand.
Both teams raised their games for the final quarter with determined and organised defences. The game was finely balanced and Moor were thrilled when Sam scored his second try of the game to equalise the scores at 5-5. The game flowed from end to end with fine tackling from all players. In the final minutes Oliver Jones received a pass from 10 metres out. He looked up to see the try line and bulldozed his way through what seemed the whole Park team to touch down and give Moor a 6-5 lead. Park through everything at Moor and it is a credit to Moor's concentration and determination that they kept them out. In the final play of the game, Peter picked up a loose ball and had a clear run to the line.
Moor had won a thrilling game 7-5. Congratulations to both sets of players. Oliver McKie was given the defensive award for the day and Louis Nolan received the attaacking award. Well done.
