Heaton with Oxcliffe HC 3 Kendal HC 1
Heaton with Oxcliffe Hockey Club had their first home game of the season and were supported by a large home crowd including special guests from the clubs new sponsors. The supporters were not disappointed by the team performance whilst sporting their new playing strip from sponsors Prestige Property Management.
Heaton started on top with countless attacks from the centre midfield pairing of Graham and Leck, creating chance after chance for the forwards Merrick, Scholes and Mooney. It did not take long for the scoring to open. The first penalty corner of the game resulted in Scholes firing a shot from the top of the D to make it 1-0 in the first five minutes. From the restart, Heaton continued to push forward down both wings with tireless runs made by Harrison, Lyon and Storton. Storton managed to create an opening to attack down the right and delivered an inch perfect cross to Williams. Quick to respond and eager to score, Williams slotted the ball coolly past the keeper making it 2-0 to Heaton, with her second goal of the season. Kendal battled on but Heaton continued to control the game, as they found it impossible to beat the hard working defence of Pickerill, Lewis, Boak and Freeman. Goal Keeper Laker remained a spectator for most of the first half. Heaton made it 3-0 before half time after fantastic play through the midfield and forward lines was rewarded by Mooney’s slick across goal shot which beat the Kendal keeper.
Player Coach Leck briefed her side during the break that Kendal would come back strong and they did not disappoint making an exciting second half for the large home crowd. Kendal tried to regain control of the game, pushing forward on the Heaton defence but still struggled to find a way past super goalie Laker. Heaton where unlucky not to add to their goal tally with Graham, Merrick and Dorrington all forcing some fine saves from the Kendal keeper. Kendal managed to find a break through towards the end of the game slotting the ball in the goal from close range, after the break down in a penalty corner. Heaton continued to push forward for the remainder of the game and were unlucky not to capitalise on the outstanding team work and passing from start to finish. The game finished 3-1 rewarding the hard working side with a win to start their home campaign. Heaton would like to thank sponsors Prestige Property Management for superb playing shirts and the Fox & Goose Pub for providing after match refreshments. The support of the home crowd did not go unnoticed and the encouragement from the side lines was instrumental in this victory. It proved to be a very proud day for the new club and its players, supporters and sponsors.
