Festival Rugby to end the season
Harrys R us
The Cheshire Cup marked the end of a busy and successful season for the Helsby U10 squad, having enjoyed an unbeaten run. The conditions underfoot were good and the weather was fine apart from the odd shower.
The first game against Caldy was closely matched with both sides tackling well and distributing the ball cleanly. Helsby managed to nudge a 2-1 victory through a well worked try involving no less than 3 Harrys in the closing minutes. Caldy came back, but were stopped in their tracks by a brilliantly timed try saving tackle from Helsby's Harry Walker. The tackle was so good the ref came over after the game to comment on it.
The second game against Knutsford saw Helsby get into their stride with some good distribution and runs giving a 3-0 victory to Helsby. After a short break Helsby were up against the tournament hosts Sandbach. The game was fast paced and intense with both teams scoring in close succession. Helsby lost out on the breakdown a few times and had to work hard with some solid defensive play to keep the score even. The game ended 1-1.
The fourth game saw Helsby play Macclesfield who had narrowly beaten them in a previous tournament. Macclesfield came out hard and fast to gain an early try. Helsby kept their heads up and upped the defensive intensity. It was a tough game with Macclesfield getting the better of the breakdown play. Helsby's hard work paid off with a try bringing things even before Macclesfield managed to develop another well work try leaving the score 2-1 to Macclesfield.
The fifth game was against Wirral saw Helsby release some of their pacey wingers and finished with a comfortable 5-0 victory. The sixth against a combined Crewe and Wirral team was closer, finishing 3-1 to Helsby. The final game was against a very strong side from Winnington. The boys did themselves proud, matching Winnington for most of the game having come back from 1-0 down. Winnington went 2-1 up with minutes to go and Helsby were looking very close to securing a draw, before the whistle went.
All in all it was a great day with the boys playing some amazing rugby and showing the same great commitment, sportsmanship and determination that has served them well all season. Here's looking forward to next season....
