Hot dog reward.
Helsby U11's hosted Ormskirk and 2 teams from Chester today. Helsby managed to field a full team despite a few of the team being unavailable through injury and illness. Helsby U11 squad numbers are increasing with Helsby welcoming a new member Shane and the return of Henry J from his Rugby League commitments.
The first game against Chester saw Helsby come out strong with solid tackling and rucking being rewarded with plenty of possession. The wingers stole the show in the first fixture with a series of fine individual efforts giving a scoreline of 7-1 to Helsby.
The second game was against Ormskirk and saw Helsby build on the first game. Helsby played a bit narrow at times, failing to make the use of the space out to the wing and instead doing it the hard way. Again solid work on the breakdown, strong runs from Sam O and Henry and some clever kicking from Ben brought Helsby their second win of the day 5-0.
The final game of the day was against another team from Chester. Helsby started the game in the same way as the previous 2 with solid defence and quick work on the breakdown opening up chances for Helsby. The first half finished with Helsby leading 1-0. The second half of the game saw a big improvement in the passing from Helsby instead of just muscling it out in the maul. Several well worked passes came together to give Helsby their best try of the season so far. Chester came close to getting a try back with some strong direct running but Helsby managed to keep a strong defensive line and turn up the heat stringing several passes together out to the wing and back in again before grounding the final try of the game. The final game finished 3-0 to Helsby.
The Helsby lads can be really proud of their performance today, with strength in all phases of play and a great attitude. It was really good to see the newer members Callum and Shay making big contributions to the game and at the same time some of the more experienced members showed big improvements in distribution of the ball and tactics.
