. . . Youth secure quarter final place

After two weeks of no football the 'Youth' returned to the 'Grove' where they welcomed Wincanton youth for the third round of the Somerset County Cup.

With a place in the quarter-finals at stake, the boys looked in buoyant mood on their arrival.

The pitch, freshly cut and marked, thanks to Dave and Nigel's hard work, and not being used during the recent wet weather looked in good condition, the weather conditions perfect for a Sunday afternoon kick about!

Team selection sorted and match instructions complete the boys left the changing rooms for kick-off.

After a minutes silence to remember those who lost their lives in France recently, the game started at an incredible pace, almost from the start the 'Youth' almost took the lead through another excellent move to cross the ball from the right, only for the Wincanton to make a point blank save.

Working again on set pieces in training this season has started to reep it's rewards and again the opening goal came from another superbly taken corner, this was closely followed with goal number 2 - we had told the boys that there will be periods where they won't have it their own way, and midway through the first half after loosing one of our defenders through injury, Wincanton started to apply pressure.

We felt the third goal would decide the game for us, or make it 'game-on' for Wincanton - that goal came just before the break with a volley into the roof of the net to take the 'Youth' into the changing rooms with a 3 nil lead.

Nothing wrong with the efforts of the boys but we still set about a further challenge for the second period along with a fresh pair of legs up front.

Wincanton started quickly but the 'Youth' soon took control again in the midfield and started to deliver some excellent through balls to the flanks and front line bringing about goal four.

The 'Youth's' wingers worked tirelessly and soon the fifth goal of the game came as just reward for one of them, his third of the game.

Wincanton kept working hard but the 'Youth' were now in control of the game and started to move the ball with even more conviction through the thirds from back to front bringing about probably the goal of the game, after some neat work leading to a clearance by Wincanton, which was controlled neatly and volleyed into the top right hand corner.

The one goal that should of been but never was came from a twenty yard volley which cannoned off the cross-bar . . . Shame we never caught that one on film!!

We wish Wincanton luck in the rest of their league campaign, as for ourselves we now look forward to the Quarter-Final draw next week.

Well done boys . . . weather permitting back to the league next week, with a tough trip to Mangotsfield.
