Old Northamptonians 26 Hereford 21
Hereford lose to fellow strugglers in Northampton
Hereford kicked off the second half down the slope and Dean Powell added a second penalty goal when ONs were penalised from the restart. The home side increased their lead when a poor clearance kick was picked up and a forward drive enabled Michael Rickner to touch down for a try, to which Alex Rose added the extra points. The Wyesiders pack continued to press and a good lineout take by Jamie Humphreys, set up a forward maul from which stand-in skipper Ali McColl crashed over for the first Hereford try, Powell was not able to add the conversion from wide out. For the next fifteen minutes play was end to end until ONs moved the ball wide to Richard Blank, who went over in the corner for the fourth and bonus point try. Hereford redoubled their efforts and a catch and drive from the lineout enabled Dan Phillips to cross the ON line, but was adjudged to have been held up. The effort was rewarded when Richard Preece was driven over for the first of his brace of tries. Shortly after, a passing movement featuring forwards and backs ended with another Hereford try when John Beart fed Richard Preece who scored in the corner. Dean Powell was not able to land extra points from the conversions. The Wyesiders continued to press right to the final whistle and it was disappointing to get nothing more than a losing bonus point, from what had been a fine fight back. The final score was 26 points to 21. There were good performances from youngsters Tom Ewins and Jamie Humphreys, Richard Preece took some good lineout ball and a lively pack won a good share of possession. Next week Dudley Kingswinford visit Wyeside for a game rearranged after two weather cancellations.

Dean Powell - 1 year agoThis is such an in accurate report! Again it gives the forwards the marority of praise and gives the backs another damming verdict. The ball supply was not great and our pack were not LIVELY, also the kicks that were put in were in affective due to the VERY POOR CHASE. The whole team are to blame from this performance and not just the back line as this report seems to suggest!
Rob Davies - 1 year agoDean - It is not my intention to put all the blame on the backs but there is certainly a lack of creativity. The forwards would assist the backs if when they pick and drive they release the ball before the forward momentum is stopped. I agree that if you play a kick/chase game both forwards and backs need to chase.
I am sorry to upset you but only write what I see. Perhaps the fact that I was just a second row forward colours my view.Post A Comment
