Hereford lose to fellow strugglers in Northampton

Hereford travelled to Northampton without injured skipper Jamie Bullock, scrum half Billy Grisman and influential flank forward Matt Pritchard and were narrowly beaten by fellow strugglers Old Northamptonians. From the kick off, the home side were quick to attack, when the movement was halted, a cross kick was picked up by winger Matt Ireland who crossed for the first score of the game, the try was converted by Alex Rose. Minutes later Dean Powell reduced the deficit with a penalty goal after ONs were caught offside. A poor kick ahead from ONs was gathered by Perry Pudge, but his good run was halted and the ball turned over. ONs scored a second converted try through Alex Rose whilst an injury to Brad Talbot was being treated. Midway through the half, the ONs full back was yellow carded for an obstruction, but despite concerted pressure, Hereford were unable to capitalise on their advantage. As the interval approached, Hereford put in a period of intense pressure on the ONs goal line, but the home defence held out and half time was reached with the score at 14 points to 3. The Hereford pack had provided a good supply of ball, but the backs were showing little creativity.
Hereford kicked off the second half down the slope and Dean Powell added a second penalty goal when ONs were penalised from the restart. The home side increased their lead when a poor clearance kick was picked up and a forward drive enabled Michael Rickner to touch down for a try, to which Alex Rose added the extra points. The Wyesiders pack continued to press and a good lineout take by Jamie Humphreys, set up a forward maul from which stand-in skipper Ali McColl crashed over for the first Hereford try, Powell was not able to add the conversion from wide out. For the next fifteen minutes play was end to end until ONs moved the ball wide to Richard Blank, who went over in the corner for the fourth and bonus point try. Hereford redoubled their efforts and a catch and drive from the lineout enabled Dan Phillips to cross the ON line, but was adjudged to have been held up. The effort was rewarded when Richard Preece was driven over for the first of his brace of tries. Shortly after, a passing movement featuring forwards and backs ended with another Hereford try when John Beart fed Richard Preece who scored in the corner. Dean Powell was not able to land extra points from the conversions. The Wyesiders continued to press right to the final whistle and it was disappointing to get nothing more than a losing bonus point, from what had been a fine fight back. The final score was 26 points to 21. There were good performances from youngsters Tom Ewins and Jamie Humphreys, Richard Preece took some good lineout ball and a lively pack won a good share of possession. Next week Dudley Kingswinford visit Wyeside for a game rearranged after two weather cancellations.
