East Shore Park looked in perfect condition for this Scottish Cup first round tie between Newburgh and Hermes.

The home side started brightly and pinned the visitors back for the first few minutes. However, in Hermes first meaningful attack, a clever ball from Close found Alexander whose pinpoint cross was powered home by M Smith. Hermes were now on fire and in the 8th minute a cross from Wilson was driven home by Dawson. Three minutes later an Alexander corner found Campbell clear in the box and his drive gave the home custodian no chance.

After this amazing start the game settled, with the visitors playing fast flowing accurate football. Newburgh had not given up and started to work hard to prevent the Aberdeen side running riot. In the 40th minute McRae replaced the hard working Courage who had taken a bad knock.

Half Time Newburgh 0 – 3 Hermes

As usual Hermes had started with a bang with 3 goals in the first 11 minutes. Even though no more goals were added, the visitors had totally dominated the first half.

The second half started as the first half ended with the home side working hard to stem the pace of the Hermes’ forwards. With control in the hands of the Bridge of Don side, the game became more of a midfield battle with neither side looking likely to increase their total.

However, in the 62nd minute the game came back to life as, controversially, keeper Lee Sweeney was sent off for handling the ball outside the box. L Smith took over between the posts. As if in sympathy, the home ‘keeper contrived to get himself sent off 4 minutes later. Having come out of his box to challenge D Wilson and being undone by the forward’s speed, his body check was deemed sufficient for the referee to show a red card.

This excitement had brought the game back to life and Wilson and Dawson swapped their roles from the second goal, with the former converting the latter’s cross. Hermes pace was continuing to bother the young home side and it was no surprise when Dawson was upended in the box and McLachlan strode forward to blast the kick home. With 10 minutes remaining the opposition number 8 was sent off for a foul on Alexander.
