Coach Baz has been busy moving into the newly erected Basra towers this week but due to its current lack of technological infrastructure he has asked me to announce the team for tomorrow.
With all the other teams in the league having a one week break, we travel to the Essex coast to be hosted by Westcliff in what is pretty much a must win (5 pointer) for us if we are to maintain a challenge for the top or, more realistically, a play-off spot.
Conditions by the seaside can often be very challenging and with the sides lying in 4th and 5th spots in the league it would be a brave man who predicted a large difference in the score at 80 minutes.
With our rehab room needing an extension and rumours of Westcliff having a reverse jolly boys outing to HQ maybe availability will play a part in this game.
That said, our strength in depth this season is best illustrated by the continued success of the 2nd XV who travel to Redingensians for probably their toughest test of the season without some seasoned regulars who have stepped up to the 1’s.
The 1st XV starting line-up is very similar to last weeks. The pack remains the same, as do the half backs.
Joe Stockwell, who has made a great impression in his two outings so far, starting both games on the wing and taking over scrum half duties to finish the games, is taking his second vacation of the year. (Well, it is February already ;-) ) Jack Mitchell, returning from injury, will slot straight into the wing position and also provides cover at 9 if required.
The FR cover on the bench is still Josh Hewitt. Tim Mathews bounces back to provide the other forward cover as the evergreen (or should it be ever tanned!) Dave Archer goes under the knife for some minor corrective surgery (Not cosmetic). We wish Dave well and hope for a speedy recovery although they don’t like to give general anaesthetics to people of his advanced years!
In the final bench slot Stuart Smart comes in for Sam Walker who has acquitted himself well in the last couple of weeks but maybe the coaches were looking for the vast experience of Smarty in this very important game. (Writers reasoning, sorry if not correct.)
With a strong squad hopefully Physio Charlotte won't have to use her Mata Hari charms glean inside info from the Westcliff Coach (and her significant other) Chris!
So in less than 24 hours Hertford will have a better idea of where we stand and what we have to play for the remainder of the season.
