I asked Andy to put into words his volunteering history and journey at Hertford RFC culminating in him becoming the recognisable "voice of the club" as match day announcer.
My career at Hertford RFC spans back to 1971 when I was part of the very early years of mini rugby but not as we know it now 7 players were there on my first visit having walked 4 miles each way to attend!
I made my 1st xv debut when I was 19 so back in 1978 scoring on debut against Old Albanians a classic wingers try from 15 yards as it was then! My career in the 1st xv lasted until 1994 when my legs gave out on me. During this time i assisted Ramsey Bovard as club team secretary looking after 6 sides until taking over on my own for a full season in the early 80;s and was also vice captain to Phil Tiddy.
Having given up in the 1st xv I went onto captain the victorious A xv for 5 years during which we went 2 and a 1/2 seasons unbeaten until we lost away to Woodford on a mud heap with the 1st xv pitch was available but having beaten them by 50 points a few weeks earlier they used this to stop us and stop us they did by a narrow 2 points after we gifted them an interception!
After this I went on to captain the 2nd xv for a season
Upon retirement from rugby in 2002 I went on to manage the 1st xv for 10 years which entailed a whole host of jobs from travel organiser, kit collector beer kitty collector and spender to cleaning the changing rooms not particularly glamorous role but one that needed doing as we entered into the age of semi professionalism.
Since giving this up I have been on various committees and on the ‘patrons committee’ raising funds to pay the players a thankless task!
Having stepped back from these roles I am now responsible for the registration of new players and the ‘match day’ announcer.
What have I got out of many roles difficult to put into words but friendships that have lasted over 40 years now and god willing will last at least another 20! The pleasure of supporting a club you have given your life to you cannot put a price on.
If you are inspired by Andy's words and would like to get involved in helping your club please get in touch.
