Bs Show Plenty of SWAG-ger against Bank of England

HRFC U13s | Match report

Our first ever fixture for this age group against a well-drilled Bank of England team that had gone unbeaten all season, including wins against OAs and Bishops Stortford.

Hertford were on the back foot from the off with some physical play opening up gaps for BofE to run in a try after only a minute on the clock. The response was good and we gradually wrestled control with our forwards competing and the back-line well marshalled. We thought we had equalised only for the ball to be dropped in the in-goal area.

Undeterred, we showed plenty of tenacity with Adam Brown - don't know who he gets it from - deciding to take on an opponent twice his size and forcing a knock-on. His reward for a couple of bruises was a cheeky try from the back of the resulting 5m scrum.

It was an even contest although most of the rugby was happening in the opposition half. The pressure finally told with Sid 'get yer head up' Thompson striking through a mass of players. The lead was fairly short-lived as BofE responded with a try that looked very close to being called in touch.

Hertford were quick out of the traps in the second half, no doubt inspired (or concerned) that yours truly had taken over refereeing duties from the BofE coach.

Three unanswered tries from Malachy, Sid and Carter put some clear distance between the teams as our more expansive rugby began to pay dividends. Credit to the Bank of England boys, as they never gave up and managed to reduce the deficit to a couple of scores at 25-15. Then came the highlight of the match: a classic two-phase move by the forwards, drawing in their opposition before releasing the backs who made forward - and straight - progress before text book passing through hands left Sonny to crown probably one of the best tries from the B squad this season and one which involved virtually the whole team.

There was still time for Seb John to grab a well deserved score, to cap a really strong performance.

FT: Hertford B U13 35-v-15 Bank of England U13

A great result and some of the best rugby played by the Bs so far this season.
