Hard fought match results in a narrow loss
A loss by just one penalty kick
It was just not meant to be.... a shock return to winter and cold dank conditions at Woolams Playing Fields as Hertford took on Fullerians in a closely contested final.
I'm not going to go into vast detail as the teams contested a very tight game.
Simply put, Hertford failed to close out their clear cut chances, defended bravely at times but we never really got into a rhythm, failed to go forward and dropped a lot of ball.
Fullerians defended well too, spending much of the first half under pressure and took one opportunity to take points with a penalty. They held onto their lead and indeed looked most likely to score in the second half as they pegged us back in our half.
Was it nerves? Possibly, but a theme this season has been our inability to win close run games. We've lost by 1-3 points in 5 games and that makes the difference between a good and a great season. Once the dust has settled after Sunday, the players and coaches will have to honestly consider what factors we can influence our game to give us that little bit extra.
I'm pleased to hear that neither of the injuries sustained on Sunday are too serious and that both players are on the mend.
Congratulations to Fullerians on their win. And we should be rightly encouraged that we made it through to our first age group cup final.
I'm very proud of the whole age group's progress this season and it's a testament to us on the day that we had 22 boys selected for the final squad - all of whom deserved their place and none of whom looked out of place. We'll take the hurt of Sunday's final and keep it in a special place ready for next season.
