Blues only seconds from victory
Having taken an 82nd minute lead the Blues had two golden opportunities to extend their lead and put the result beyond doubt before losing concentration 30 seconds from the final whistle to concede an equaliser.
For 75 minutes this was a largely uneventful game with both sides effectively cancelling each other out. That all changed, however, when with a quarter of an hour remaining the Blues began to find their rhythm and gradually dominated the exchanges.
In a game of little goalmouth action, a scoreless draw was looking the likely outcome until the Blues’ apparent superior fitness started to tell as the game was drawing to a close.
Tommy Wade and Ollie Sharman both went close with successive headers from an 80th minute corner - that were well-blocked - and George Lutaaya scraped the top of the bar with an overhead kick from the loose ball.
This was followed by an excellent flowing move involving Charlie Ruff, Tyler Hatherly and Matt Thomson, that ended with Tommy Wade’s turn and shot being well-saved by the home keeper at the expense of a corner. Matt Thomson took the corner kick and delivered the ball into the box where Tommy Wade’s rose highest to head the ball goalwards. Unfortunately for him, the ball hit the post but fortunately for the Blues. George Lutaaya was on hand to bundle the ball home.
This goal should really have been enough to secure victory. So, when Elliott Bailey raced through to chip over the stranded keeper - only for the ball to go wide of a post – and Tommy Wade shot into an empty net – only to see the ball strike Elliott Bailey on the line – there was no hint that the misses would be costly.
They were , though, because in the 93rd minute the hosts equalised when the Blues – in the knowledge that only 30 seconds remained – inexplicably lost concentration. And, so, the Blues were forced to settle for a share of the points, looking back ruefully at the number of points they have dropped this season in games they should really have won.
