League Match - Old Chelmsfordians (A)
Last game of the season...
Today was to be our final game of the season as we faced Old Chelmsfordians at their home ground. We were very impressed with their set up and on a glorious sunny day, it was a great day for football along with the quality of the surface to go with it. You can tell that they care about their pitch and full credit for that.
Old Chelmsfordians had more important things to worry about as they needed a point or more to stay in division 2. We didn't have the services of Jack Barwick or Steven Penaflor due to injury but still had the team prepared for today's game.
The first half started in the same fashion as most weeks but with a much quicker tempo. We was able to move the ball quickly around and ensure we maintained good possession. The most impressive part of it all was the fact that everyone wanted to play and be involved which made the process a whole lot easier.
Old Chelmsfordians wanted to try and play football, but we broke the ball down quickly and was eager to get back on the front foot and rotate the ball quickly.
For all our good work in possession, we really couldn't create to many chances from it all. A blow come in the first 5minutes as Lewis Searle had to come off from his asthma and Chris Jagiello took his place.
We just couldn't create anything in their box. Old Chelmsfordians looked to win the ball back in their own box and break quickly to catch us out of position. On occasions they were successful, slipping balls through but Ryan Hirst was on hand to gather any loose balls that beat and resilient back four.
We broke in numbers and our full backs in Joe Varty and Toby Creegan were becoming evermore braver as they pushed on and become involved in attacks.
Matt Morley who had an outstanding game last weekend kept up with his good work as he was breaking things down and looking to move the ball sharply and with a lot of success also.
Carl Johns made way for Tom Warwick to freshen things up top, and become involved in our only chance of the first half as the ball was played into him, with that Tom spun the ball between the centre half and left back for the on rushing Chris Jagiello who had the chance but put it just wide of the near post and surprisingly our only chance of the first half.
We spoke to the boys at half time and reinsured them that the football they was playing, they could be really proud of. Ultimately we just didn't create enough chances in front of goal and that is something we have been trying to make better over the past few weeks.
The game as always continued in the same fashion as the first with ourselves maintaining a lot of the ball and pushed forward in numbers. The only thing we couldn't do was create a good enough chance to score.
The most noticeable thing which we have took on board was the amount of bodies in the box. There were a lot more bodies, but we didn't put enough crosses into the box and ensure that we could have a chance of scoring.
Something we weren't expecting however was to concede and this is exactly what happened midway through the first half. The ball come long with Chris Cooke and Oli Bell both getting stuck underneath the ball, which in turn deflected off Oli and into the path of the Old Chelmsfordians striker who had the simple chance of putting the ball away from 15yards out. A real blow and something we needed to bounce back from and quickly.
Even at 1-0 down though, we never stop playing football and that's the way we have always wanted to play. Our rewards come on the 57th minute as Chris Jagiello received the ball on the right hand side midway in their half. He beat the left back and drove for goal which the Old Chelmsfordians keeper didn't have covered very well as he left his front post open enough for Chris to strike the ball in the back of the net. It's nothing that we didn't deserve however and now we needed to push on.
The last 15minutes we become a little bit more desperate as we looked to put balls into good areas and mix things up a little bit more to change the dynamics of the game.
Joe Beadle come very close with a good strike outside the box which looked to be settling in the top left hand corner but just whistled over the bar.
Matt Morley made a great run as he beat 4 or 5 players from our own edge of the box onto their edge of the box, but the defender was able to block his shot and away for a throw in.
For all our hard work, we really couldn't finish off with a win which was warranted from the performance. To top it all off, we could have lost the game if it wasn't for Ryan being brave off his line and making a good save with his chest to deny Old Chelmsfordians all 3points and maintained it at a point a piece.
Full Time: Old Chelmsfordians 1-1 Heybridge Swifts Football Club (Chris Jagiello 57')
Post Match Thoughts:
I think today's game probably summed up our season in a nut shell. Some real positives from the game, some great football and we really maintained the ball well. But going forwards we either weren't clinical enough, or didn't really create any good chances. Defensively we looked solid, but one slip up and we go 1-0 down and we need to recover. This is a lot like our season, and really luck hasn't been on our side at all.
I think we can all agree that for the talent we have in the squad, we should have done a little better this season. But I know the boys have learnt a lot this year about success, defeat and the bond they now have between them is the strongest i have ever seen it. They are a tight unit now and I think next season you will see so many more players come out of their shell and evolve into adults as well as players.
When I see them play football like they did for long periods in the game, i couldn't be more prouder of them. When i see them fight and battle like they did last week against Dunmow I couldn't be more proud of them and certainly every time I see them pull on a black and white jersey and play for that crest I couldn't be more prouder.
These boys have took certainly myself on a journey I never thought was possible, and seeing them play now to how they were when we first took over two and a half years ago then the achievement is greater than winning the cup or making a back to back final. You are a pleasure to work with (most of the time) and we would do anything for you lot.
All this wouldn't have been possible without you love and dedication throughout the year and the support as I always mention in every match this year has been amazing. We couldn't thank you all enough and hopefully now you can have a refresh and break before pre season.
Finally I would like to a small thank you to my right hand man Grazzer for his hard work, support and becoming assistant at the beginning of the year. Having you around has been great and their is much more success to come in the future i am sure of it.
Man of the match
Really, for me Matt Morley has been outstanding again in today's game. He's an engine in midfield and provides quality to go with it. He is really growing into that role and i am sure that everyone would agree he deserves man of the match for today's game.
Once again thank you and we will see you in the pre season.
