Fantastic performance results in a win for Under 11s

What a difference a week makes – the sun was shining and there was a pleasant summer breeze blowing gently across the Heyford ground.

Heyford were fielding a slightly new look side with Ethan T making his debut, backed up by Tom C, Max M, Blake M, James M, Charlie M, Jake W and skipper James W.

ONs won the toss and chose to bowl.

Max and debutant Ethan opened the batting for Heyford and completed a solid partnership of 11 runs for no wickets lost with Ethan scoring his first boundary for Heyford by pulling one of the opening ON bowlers through square leg for four. This was greeted by rapturous applause from his team mates and the on looking supporters.

The next pair to the wicket was James M and Tom who scored 20 runs between them while being dismissed once each. The highlight of the partnership was a crisply driven shot for four through extra cover by James.

The third pairing saw a brace of left handers, Charlie and Blake, carefully negotiating the bowling with Charlie finding the boundary three times with lusty blows through the leg side.

The final pair was Jake and James W who took the final score to 278 with some good running between the wickets and by hitting a sprinkling of boundaries.

Nether Heyford closed on 278 for 4 wickets, resulting in the net score of 258.

With 259 to win the game was certainly in the balance and when the first ball of the ONs reply slipped down the leg side for four byes the omens were not good. The next ball, however, set the tone for the second innings of the match. Max pitched the ball on a perfect length and the off stump rocked back to give him a wicket Jimmy Anderson would have been proud of.

The second over was bowled by Ethan, opening the bowling as he needed to leave early for a date with Wembley Stadium. Fourth ball into his Heyford career, the ON openers heard the “death rattle” for the second time in as many overs. Ethan celebrated his first wicket with the rest of the team running up to congratulate him.

From then on the Heyford boys took wickets at regular intervals as ONs struggled to keep the attack at bay. Ethan completed a memorable debut by claiming a second wicket (surely the football was going to pale into insignificance following this performance!) and was followed by Charlie, Blake and Tom all hitting the stumps.

James M also claimed a scalp with Max taking a smart catch behind the stumps as the ball flew from top edge of bat to batsman’s helmet before looping towards the ground.

ONs finished on 266 for the loss of 9 wickets – a net score of 221 and a win for Heyford by 37 runs.

This was a match played in a great spirit from both sides typified by the ONs coach/umpire, Steve Reid, offering the use of one of his team (Jacob) as a fielder for Heyford when Ethan had to leave half way through the innings.

Jacob was kept busy in the field and fielded like a demon, nearly running out one his team mates in the process.

This was another very pleasing performance from the Heyford boys and a thoroughly deserved victory – once again highlighting how far this team has come in a few short weeks.

A massive “thank you” goes out to Colin, Neil and all the mums and dads who helped to set up and clear up. We look forward to the final fixture of the season which will take place on Sunday 9th August at Overstone.
