SWPL Cup Final Match Report

Hibernian Ladies lose out in extra time. SWPL match report.

In what was a brilliant game of football last night, Hibernian Ladies did all they could to deny Glasgow City the opportunity to retain their League Cup title, but were just edged by the jubilant women in orange and black.

Hibernian were the initial leaders in the game, pressing City high for the first half; an absolute screamer of a goal from Heather Richards had the crowd going wild. The Hibees playmaker notices Lee Alexander off her line and shot from the half way line but City recovered in the second half with an equaliser and sealed their victory four minutes into extra time.

Hibernian had a couple of great chances to take the lead early on, with Lucy Graham failing to hit the target at just six minutes in. After a foul on Lizzie Arnot, the resulting free kick led to a corner that was fired towards goal by an Abi Harrison header, which came off the City bar and allowed the Glasgow side an opportunity to breathe.

Hibernian took the lead in the 26th minute, Heather Richard’s sharp eye spotting City’s goalkeeper positioning & hitting the ball from just inside the City half, sending it over City keeper Lee Alexander’s head into the back of the net.

Three minutes after that spectacular goal Hibernian almost doubled their lead, with Lucy Graham, Richards and Lizzie Arnot passing between each other before Alexander saved Arnot’s low shot at goal.

Glasgow City came into the match towards the end of the first half, with the whistle coming at the wrong time when they started to create clearer cut chances for their attacking play.

Five minutes into the second half, Jo Love received a free kick and fired the ball from 25 yards, hitting the Hibernian crossbar. Just minutes later Lucy Graham cleared a Glasgow City effort off her goal line. It was obvious Glasgow City wanted to take the final 45 minutes to the young Hibernian side.

City were back out for the second half on fire and continued piling the pressure on Hibernian. This paid off in the 77th minute, after a free kick was delivered to Kerry Montgomery who shot it past Fife into the net.
Both sides has chances towards the end of normal time, however as the whistle blew at 90 mins it remained 1-1 and extra time beckoned.

It was just four minutes into extra time when Susan Fairlie slipped past this defence and received a free kick from Captain Leanne Ross, scoring at the far post. The Hibernian girls had a chance to equalise, with an early corner of the second half of extra time hitting the post, but City held them back to become the victors of the night. Hibernian almost drew level right at the death which
would’ve saw penalty kicks, however the final effort by Smith was just inches wide.

Glasgow City were victorious and retained their League Cup Trophy, however know that this young Hibernian side – with an average age of just 19 years old will be on their tales both domestically and in future cup competitions.
